Historical Description

WESTBURY is a village and extensive agricultural parish, bounded on the south by the river Axe, and pleasantly seated on an elevated declivity of the Meridip hills, overlooking the valley, with a station named “Lodge Hill” on the Cheddar Valley branch of the Great Western railway, 4 miles north-west by road and 3 ½ by railway from Wells, 6 south-east from Axbridge and 129 ½ from London, in the Wells division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Wells Forum, union and county court district of Wells, rural deanery of Axbridge, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. Westbury derives its name from its situation to the west of Wells, and the term “Burg” or “Bury,” a fortified town or village: this name was applied to the manor by the Saxons previous to the Conquest, and it was one of the ancient possessions of the see of Wells, having been granted by King Edward the Confessor to Bishop Giso A.D. 1065, and was comprised within the territory of Wells. The church of St. Lawrence is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in a debased Perpendicular style, with some remains of Saxon, Norman and Early English work, and consists of chancel, nave, with an arcade of three arches on the south side, south aisle, south porch, with trefoiled parapet and pinnacles, and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. Bellamy Brewett, a former vicar, d. 1885; there are monuments to the Rodney, Spencer and Knyfton families, to the Rev. James Lewen M.A. d, 1753, a, former vicar, and others: in 1887 the church was thoroughly restored at a cost of £2,300, when the tower was rebuilt, and provided with a peal of 6 bells by Georgiana Sophia Knyfton, as a memorial of her husband, Thomas Tutton Knyfton esq. of Uphill Castle, who died Feb. 2nd, 1887; vestry and organ chamber also added, the roofs and flooring renewed and the interior re-seated with oak: the bells, previously four in number, were re-cast into six of smaller size: there are sittings for 220 persons. A venerable yew tree, supposed to be about 900 years old, stands on the east side of the church. The register dates from the year 1654. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £210, including 25 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since, 1891 by the Rot. Chas. Barnes M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are owners of the great tithes, having; purchased them in 1899. Here is a Bible Christian chapel, built in 1872, and seating 70 persons; a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1864, with 40 sittings, and a Temperance Hall, erected in 1874, to seat 60. At an intersection of the roads of the village stand the remains of a cross, to which at one time the “stocks” were attached. On Westbury beacon, 892 feet above the sea level, is a tumulus. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, and Reginald Benett Graves-Knyfton esq. of Uphill Castle, Weston-super-Mare, are the chief landowners: several of the resident farmers farm their own land The soil on the higher side of the parish is a thin stratum of red loam, resting on mountain limestone and conglomerate; the lower part is a red marl, and the moor is alluvial, of a rich quality. The chief crops are pasture. The acreage is 3,022; rateable value, £5,597; the population in 1901 was 577.

National School (mixed), built in 1885, for 120 children; average attendance, 100.
