Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
WESTON is a parish and village and head of a petty sessional division, having a station on the Midland railway, and is 2 miles north-west from Bath, in the Frome division of the county, hundred of Bath Forum, union and county court district of Bath, rural deanery of Keynsham, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The river Avon, here crossed by a stone bridge, skirts the southern boundary of the parish, and a tributary to the Avon, which rises in the Lansdown hills, flows through the village. The church of All Saints, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1832, is an edifice of stone in the Later English style, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: the church was enlarged in 1893 by the addition of a new chancel and transepts, and reseated in oak, at a cost of over £4,000: it now affords 589 sittings, of which 300 are free. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £290, including 15 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Maurice Erskine Hoets M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. St. John the Evangelist's is an ecclesiastical parish, formed from the parish of All Saints, July 4, 1879, and comprises Locksbrook and Lower Weston, in the civil parish of Weston: the church, erected in 1838 and enlarged in 1869, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south transept and a belfry: a new transept was built and consecrated in 1887, at a cost of £879, and in 1900 a new vestry was added at the west end; in 1901 three stained windows were erected, completing a series of five, two of which are memorials to Her late Majesty Queen Victoria: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1878. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1897 by the Rev. John Church Church B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a chapel for Lady Huntingdon’s Connexion, in Upper Weston, erected in 1852: a Wesleyan chapel on Newbridge Hill, built in 1891, and a Gospel hall, at Locksbrook, erected in 1865. Walcot and St. Saviour’s (Bath) cemetery is 16 acres in extent: the cemetery for Weston parish adjoining has an area of about 3 acres: and there is a mortuary chapel which is used for the joint parishes of Walcot and Weston; the cemetery is under the control of a Burial Board of nine members. St. Michael’s (Bath) cemetery of 12 acres has also a mortuary chapel. The club and reading room for the working classes was given by a former vicar, at a cost of £500, and is supported by the contributions of the members. The charities are of £30 yearly value, of which sum £10 10s. is distributed in bread and the Test in money. Partis College, at New Bridge Hill, is a home for 30 widows or orphan daughters of officers in the army and navy, or members of the legal, medical or clerical professions, who have attained their 50th year and are possessed of an income of £20 and not exceeding £30 a year; to this is added from £30 to £35 annually out of the trust fund. On Lansdown Hill, in this parish, is a monument to Sir Bevill Grenville, a gallant officer who joined the Royalist army in 1642, and fell in an engagement here on July 5, 1643. A fair is held on the 10th of August for cattle, sheep, pigs and cheese. William Oliver esq. is lord of the manor; the Rev. Edward John Paul Wilkins-Leir, of Weston House, and the trustees of the late Captain George William Blathwayt, of Dyrham Park, Chippenham (d, 1899), are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; the subsoil is stone and blue clay. Bath oolite is found in the upper part of the parish, and blue and white has in the lower parts; the latter is quarried and burnt into lime. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 2,536 acres of land and 16 of water; rateable value, £34,138; the population of the civil parish in 1891 was 4,933, of which 2,222 are attached to All Saints’ church; the population of St. John the Evangelist ecclesiastical parish in 1891 was 2,714.
By Local Government Board Order 18,114, March 25, 1885, Gowdry’s Farm was transferred to Langridge, and under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882” (45 and 46 Vict. c. 58), a further detached part was added to Langridge.
