Historical Description

Widcombe church (St. Thomas a Becket), the parish church of Lyncombe with Widcombe, and the oldest church in Bath, is a structure of the Perpendicular period, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles at the angles containing one bell: it was built by Prior Byrde (1499—1529), and was an appendage of the now extinct church of St. Mary de Stall in Bath; but from various fragments discoverd at different times it appears that an earlier edifice has previously existed on the same site and probably from the Norman era: the church was partly restored in 1869 under the superintendence of Mr. C. E. Davis F.S.A, architect, of Bath, the walls strengthened by an inner casing of stone, a new roof placed and the internal fittings renewed at an expense of £1,400, raised by voluntary contributions: in the church are various memorials of the 18th century to the family of Bennett: there are sittings for 110 persons. The register of baptisms dates from 1574; marriages, 1612; burials, 1592: these include also those of Lyncombe from the same dates. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £400, with residence, in the gift of Simeon’s trustees, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Herbert Carnegie Knox M.A. of Balliol College, Oxford.
