Historical Description

WINSCOMBE is a parish and village, on the northeastern side of the Mendip Hills and on the Bristol and Bridgwater road, with two stations on the Cheddar Valley branch of the Great Western railway, 130 miles from London and 2 north-west from Axbridge, in the Wells division of the county, hundred of Winterstoke, Axbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Locking, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. James, standing on the slope of a hill, is a large and elegant building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, north porch and an embattled tower with pierced parapet and pinnacles, and containing 6 bells, rehung in 1878, and again in a new cage in 1897, at a cost of about £200: the belfry has a groined roof, and the porch once had a parvise: there are mural tablets to the Knollis family, one of whom was killed at the head of his regiment at Guadaloupe, at the attack on that island, then held by the French, in 1794; in 1863 the church was thoroughly restored and the chancel rebuilt: there are sittings for 400 persons: the churchyard, in which there is a remarkably large and beautiful yew tree, commands extensive views of the surrounding country. The register dates from the year 1662. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £220, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Weils, and held since 1895 by the Rev. John Alfred Dodd M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. The chapel of ease was erected at Sandford in 1885, at a cost of £1,100, consists of chancel and nave, and a belfry containing 3 bells: there are 100 sittings. Here is a Baptist chapel, with 300 sittings; a new Wesleyan chapel, seating 200 persons, was erected in 1898 by Sidney Hill esq. and there is a meeting house for the Society of Friends, with sittings for 400. A fair is held on the first Monday in May, for cattle. The charities amount to £8 yearly. Calamine is found in Sandford Hill, but is not now worked, and there are lime kilns and limestone quarries. The carboniferous limestone dips towards the south, being thrust up by the old red, which appears between the “Shoot Shelf” and the church, and in other places. About 1830, the late Mr. Isaac Rich, while engaged in mining for calamine and lead in Sandlford Hill, discovered a jar containing about 300 silver and copper coins, mostly Roman, and a number of these are now (1901) in the possession of F. W. B. Rich esq. of Sandford. Winscombe Hill, the seat of Mrs. Yatman, and erected in 1858, stands on a shoulder of the Mendips called “Wavering Down,” and commands some extensive views of the Vale of Cheddar. Kildare is the seat of Mrs. Edmunds. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, Charles Lund Fry Edwards esq. of The Court, Axbridge; Charles Edward Smith esq. Mrs. A. Gr. Lethbridlge, Mrs. Yatman, of Winscombe Hall, and Mrs. Fownes-Luttrell, of Badgworth Court, are the chief landowners. The soil is various, resting on the limestone; in the valley, light loam, with a clayey subsoil. The land is chiefly used for dairy and market gardening purposes. The acreage is 1,140; rateable value, £9,658; the population in 1901 was 1,328.

A School Board of 5 members was formed March 4, 1881, W. Reece, Axbridge, clerk to the board.

Board, Sandford, built in 1891, with residence for the master, for 100 children'; average attendance, 57.

Board, Woodborough, for 148 children; average attendance, 90.

Society of Friends’, Sidcot, founded, in 1808 & partly endowed; the school is available for 70 boys & 54 girls.
