Historical Description

WINSFORD is a parish and village on the river Exe and on the road to Exmoor and Lynton from Tiverton, 8 miles north-north-west from Dulverton station on the Devon and Somerset section of the Great, Western railway and 12 south-west from Dunster, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Williton, Dulverton petty sessional division and union, sounty court district of South Molton, rural deanery of Dunster, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary Magdalen is an ancient edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells, rehung and refitted and a treble bell added in 1897, in commemoration of the late Queen’s Diamond Jubilee: an organ was presented to the parish in 1858 by the late Rev. David Twopenny, vicar of Stockbury, Kent, from 1831: the church was restored in 1891 at a cost of £1,300, under the care of the late Mr. J. D. Sedding, architect: there are sittings for 250 persons. The registers date from 1660, but are imperfect. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £320, including residence and 90 acres of glebe, in the gift of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and held since 1857 by the Rev. William Paley Anderson B.D. late fellow and tutor of that college. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 18189. The charities, amounting to £30 yearly, include “Joyce’s,” producing about £22 annually, being one-third of the rent of a farm, bequeathed by Thomas Joyce (ob. 1683), for the benefit of the poor in the parishes of Winsford, Cutcombe and Wootton Courtney. On Winsford Hill is a large deep hole known locally as the “Devil’s Punch Bowl.” Sir Charles Thomas Dyke Acland bart. of Killerton, Devon, is lord of the manor and the chief landowner. The soil is clay and loamy and the subsoil rock shillett. The crops are chiefly hay. The area is 8,656 acres of land and 32 of water; rateable value, £3,754; the population in 1901 was 358.
