Historical Description

WOOKEY is a village and extensive parish, on the road from Wells to Wedmore, at the foot of the Mendip Hills, with a station 1 mile south-west from the village, within the parish of Out St. Cuthbert, Wells, on the Cheddar Valley branch of the Great Western railway, 125 miles from London and 2 west from Wells, in the Wells division of the county, hundred of Wells Forum, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Wells, rural deanery of Axbridge, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Matthew is an ancient building of stone, in the Gothic style of the 14th century, consisting of chancel, nave with an arcade of three bays on either side, aisles, a mortuary chapel to the Clarke family, added in the 16th century, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 5 bells: the font is ancient: there are monuments to the Piers and Salmon families, to Sir Jacob Wolff bart. of Cams Hall, Hants, and a baron of the Holy Roman Empire, who died in 1809, and others: the east window is stained, and there are five other stained windows; the chancel retains a piscina and reredos: the church was restored in 1872, at a cost of about £2,000, and has sittings for 350 persons. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £157, including 18 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Edward Barnwell Cook B.A. of Christ Church College, Oxford. Here is a Baptist Mission Hall, built in 1884, with sittings for 70 persons. The charities include the church lands, consisting of about 17 acres, given by deed in 1614 and 1622, and yielding £66 10s. which is devoted to church purposes, and the poor’s lands, yielding £42 8s. yearly, which sum is distributed in money; Eldard and Salmon’s charity of £5 is for bread. Mellifont, a mansion near the church, is partly a building of the last century, and contains also portions, of the 14th century Rectory house; the principal entrance is surmounted by a lofty square embattled tower; it is at present the residence of Miss Burnett-Stuart, Court Farm was formerly a manor house of the bishops of Bath and Wells; and many of the letters of Bishop Beckington (1443—66) are dated from this place. Miss Burnett-Stuart, who is lady of the manor; Lord Brougham and Vaux, the trustees of the late Ven. E. A. Salmon M.A. archdeacon of Wells (d. 1899) and the Rev. J. Band are the chief landowners. The soil varies; a rich loam prevails near the village, and on the hill and near the river Axe, which has its source in “Wookey Hole,” it is a bed of diluvial gravel; on the south of the village blue has prevails, covered with strong clay. The land is chiefly in pasture, on which large dairies are kept, producing excellent Cheddar cheese. The acreage is 3,420; rateable value, £8,231; the population in 1891 was 961 in the civil and 564 in the ecclesiastical parish.
