Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
WOOLLEY (or Wooley) is a parish and village, 3 ½ miles north from Bath, where is the nearest railway station, in the Frome division of the county, Bath Forum hundred, Weston petty sessional division, Bath union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of All Saints is a plain quadrangular building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of nave, west porch and a western tower with a dome, containing one bell; there are sittings for 100 persons. The register, dating from 1560, is a transcript of the older register, then much decayed, made in 1760. The living is a chapelry, annexed to the rectory of Bathwick, net yearly value £96, with 5 ½ acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Lord Barnard, and held since 1871 by the Rev. George Tugwell M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford, prebendary of Wells, and surrogate, who resides at Bath. The soil is various and stone is found; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The acreage is 367; rateable value, £455; the population in 1901 was 70.
