Historical Description

WORLE is a parish and village on the road from Bristol to Weston-super-Mare, with a station in the village on the Weston and Clevedon Light railway and another station 1 mile south of the village, on the Great Western railway, and is 2 ½ miles east from Weston-super-Mare and 135 ½ from London, in the Wells division of the county, Winterstoke hundred, Axbridge petty sessional division and union, Weston-super-Mare county court district, rural deanery of Locking, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Martin is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a western tower with pierced quatrefoiled parapet and crocketed pinnacles and octagonal turret at the south-east angle and a dwarf spire, and containing 6 bells: on the south side of the nave is an arched recess inclosing a coffin-shaped slab, and there is a good stone pulpit: the south door and font are Late Norman: the octagonal turret which rises above the parapet of the tower has arched traceried panels in the upper stage, which is finished with a plain cornice; the spire is ribbed and has a stringcourse running round near the top which is surmounted by a ball and vane; the lower portion of the tower forms a western porch, and has a good recessed doorway: there is a priests’ doorway on the south side of the chancel: the church was thoroughly restored and reseated with open benches in 1870, at a cost of £1,700: there are sittings for 300 persons: in the churchyard, enlarged and consecrated in 1892, are several altar tombs. The register dates from the year 1598. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £154, including 5 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Charles Archer Kent M.A. of Exeter Collage, Oxford. There is a Free Methodist chapel here. The charities amount to about £62 yearly. The trustees of the late Thomas Charles esq. Lieut.-Col. the Rt. Hon. Sir Arthur Divett Hayter P.C., M.P. of South Hill Park, Berks, E. A. Hardwick esq. and William Wyndham esq. D.L., J.P. of Dinton House, Salisbury, are the chief landowners. The soil is clay. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 1,894 acres; rateable value, £9,050; the population in 1891 was 1,018 civil, 1,000 ecclesiastical.

By Local Government Board Order 17,338, March 25, 1885, a detached part of Kewstoke known as Longworthy was transferred to Worle, and a detached part of Worle added to Kewstoke, for civil purposes.

National Schools (mixed & infants), once a rectorial or monastic barn, supposed to have been connected with the priory of Woodspring, but restored in 1866; the school will hold 216 children; average attendance, 68 boys, 76 girls & 85 infants.
