Historical Description

Wrington is distant twelve miles north from Wells, and eleven south; from Bristol. The church is a handsome structure, consisting of a nave, chancel, side aisles, and a porch embattled on the top, and ornamented with a great number of pinnacles. At the west end is one of the most beautiful towers in the kingdom. It is one hundred and forty feet high to the top of the battlements, which are ornamented with four corner turrets, and sixteen elegant Gothic pinnacles, fifteen feet in height.

"Northward of the church, and adjoining the church-yard, is an old thatched house, little better than a cottage, which had the honour of being the birth-place of that celebrated philosopher John Locke, whose mother, travelling in these parts, was here taken in labour, and constrained to take up her residence."

The residue of the road to Bristol affords but little to attract the travellers notice.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WRINGTON is a parish and village on the slope of a hill commanding extensive views, 1 mile from the Bristol and Bridgwater road, facing the north side of the Mendip Hills, 4 miles south-east from Yatton station on the main line of the Great Western railway, 7 north-east from Axbridge and 10 south-west from Bristol, in the Wells division of the county, Brent-with-Wrington hundred, Axbridge petty sessional division and union, Bristol county court district, rural deanery of Portishead, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells; the river Yeo passes through the parish on its course to the Bristol channel, and the Wrington Vale light railway, now (1901) in course of construction, from Congresbury to Blagdon, passes through the parish. Occasional petty sessional courts are held here on the first Wednesday (month to be fixed). List of magistrates and places in the division, see Axbridge. The church of All Saints is a very fine edifice of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, south porch, and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles and containing a clock with chimes and 6 bells: all the parapets of the building, including the aisles, are pierced with elegant tracery, relieved at intervals by crocketed pinnacles, which on the clerestory rises from a string-course, and on the aisles from buttresses: the south porch, which is low, and not gabled, has a similar parapet, but without pinnacles: the lofty western tower, a magnificent composition, is of two stages only, and in the tower there is a recessed and panelled west doorway, with a large window of six lights above it; the whole of the tower above the roofs forms the second stage, and is lighted on each face by two windows of great height, with double transoms, and separated by tall shafts terminating in crocketed pinnacles, which rise above the elegant open traceried parapet; at the angles of the tower are double buttresses with crocketed gablets, above which rise four large panelled and richly crocketed pinnacles: on the east gable of the nave is an open bell turret: in 1892—3 the church was partially restored and fitted with new heating apparatus, the bells re-adjusted and the organ repaired a total cost of about £314, and in 1901 the building was renovated at a cost of about £400: there are sittings for 454 persons. The churchyard was enlarged in 1895 by a gift from Capt. Forester. The registers date from the years, baptisms, 1538; marriages, 1540; burials, 1537. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £340, with residence and 37 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of James Kennedy esq. and held since 1890 by the Rev. George Middleton Ashdown M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Christ Church chapel of ease at Redhill, is a building of stone, consecrated in January, 1844: the chancel was raised and improved in 1882, at a cost of £120, as a memorial to the late T. Hamlin esq. and in 1898 was thoroughly restored, a new organ chamber built, and the interior reseated, at a cost of about £1,200: the church affords sittings for 300 persons. There is a Congregational chapel with 300 sittings, and a Wesleyan chapel seating 200 persons. The charities, chiefly invested in stocks, amount to about £12 yearly, and are distributed in bread, clothing and money. There are also charities producing about £25 a year for educational purposes. The reading room for working men, erected by the late Mrs. Young, is well supplied with newspapers &c. The John Locke Hall consists of reading and smoking rooms, and is maintained by Major-General T. B. Harrison, of West Hay; the Parish Council holds its meetings here. Mill puff and flock are manufactured here. A charter for a market on Tuesdays was granted in the reign of Edward II. but it has fallen into disuse. A fair was formerly held on the 9th of September. John Locke, the famous philosopher, was born in this parish, August 29th, 1632, in a small thatched cottage immediately adjoining the church, which however, has long since fallen down and nothing of it now remains; on a tablet formerly let into the gable of the house, but now inserted in the wall of the churchyard, is the following inscription: “John Locke was born in this house, ad. mdcxxxii. This stone was erected by the inhabitants of this parish ad. mdcccxliv.” He died at Oates, in Essex, 28 October, 1704. At Barley Wood, a little to the east of the village, stands the beautiful cottage, formerly the residence (1786 to 1828) of the distinguished authoress Mrs. Hannah More; it is now the property of and occupied by Henry Herbert Wills esq. West Hay, half-a-mile north-west, is the residence of Maj.-Gen. Thomas B. Harrison J.P.; Uplands, the same distance off, is the residence of P. O. Gill esq.; The Grove, 1 mile north-west, of William Skinner Holt esq.; Alburys, of Col. Thomas Biggs; Yeomans, of Frederick William Hesse esq. and Havyet Lodge, 1 ¼ miles south-east, of James Thornton Gibson esq. M.A., J.P. J. T. Gibson esq. who is lord of the manor, Alfred Capper Pass esq. of Clifton Down, near Bristol, and Henry Herbert Wills esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is various, mostly resting on the new red sandstone; the subsoil is clay and shale. The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats, turnips, mangolds and potatoes; and much land is in pasture, producing excellent cheese and butter. The area is 5,748a. 2r. 24p.; rateable value, £8,886; the population in 1891 was 1,472, of whom 156 are in the ecclesiastical district of St. Katherine’s, Felton Hill. The population in 1901 was 1,548.

National (mixed), built in 1857, in the Pointed style, at a cost of about £1,500, on land given by the late Duke of Cleveland K.G. for 177 children.

National (mixed), Redhill, built in 1874, for 100 children; average attendance, 80.
