Historical Description

YATTON is a village and parish, surrounded by a remarkably level and fertile plain, extending nearly to the banks of the Bristol Channel: it has a station on the Bristol and Exeter section of the Great Western railway, which is the junction of the branch lines from Wells and Clevedon, and is 12 miles south-west from Bristol and 4 east-by-south from Clevedon, in the Northern division of the county, Winterstoke hundred, Long Ashton petty sessional division, Long Ashton union, Bristol county court district, rural deanery of Portishead, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is a cruciform edifice of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, south porch and a central embattled tower containing a clock and 8 bells: the tower carries a truncated spire which is now (1901) being rebuilt at an estimated cost of £1,100: there are several ancient monuments of the Newton family, including an exceedingly beautiful altar-tomb of white alabaster, with effigies of Sir Richard Cradock Newton, Chief Justice of Common Pleas, ob. 1448, and Emma or Emmota (Perrott) his wife; the effigy of the judge has a collar of S.S. said to be the earliest example of this decoration worn by a judge; the sides of the tomb are profusely sculptured and adorned with shields of arms: there is another tomb with effigies, said to represent Sir John Newton, eldest son of the preceding, and Isabel (Chedder) his wife: there are sittings for 442 persons. The registers date from the year 1675, and there are churchwardens’ accounts dating from 1445 A.D. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £214, including 10 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1896 by the Rev. John Harrison M.A. of University College, Durham, and surrogate. The Free Methodist chapel here was erected in 1888. The Brethren have a meeting-house at Horsecastle, and there is also one for the Society of Friends, erected in 1866. The charities amount to £66, arising from lands left to the second poor and distributed yearly. A market is held for the sale of cattle on the 2nd Monday in each month, and extra markets are held on the 2nd and 4th Mondays in the months of Aug. Sept. Oct, and Nov. as general markets. There are numerous small cattle owners in this, parish. The soil is alluvial; subsoil, clay. The crops are wheat, barley and beans, but the land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 5,374 acres; rateable value, £21,403 for the civil parish; the population in 1901 was 1,967.
