Historical Description

CHEDDLETON is a parish and pleasant village, delightfully seated on an eminence above the Cauldon canal and the river Churnet, on the road from Leek to Longton and Cheadle, with a station half a mile south-east from the village, on the Churnet valley section and another at Wallgrange, a mile north-west, on the Leek and Stoke branch of the North Staffordshire railway, 16 miles from Macclesfield, 3 south from Leek, 7 north from Cheadle and 150 from London, in the Leek division of the county, North Totmonslow hundred, Leek petty sessional division and county court district, Cheadle union, rural deanery of Leek, archdeaconry of Stoke-on-Trent and diocese of Lichfield. The church of St. Edward, until 1450 a chapel of ease to Leek, is a building of stone of the 13th century, the tower and roofs having been apparently added or renewed in the time of Queen Elizabeth: it consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel is separated from the nave by a fine oak screen, and in the choir house is a small portion of the old screen of the 13th century; the font, of alabaster, was the gift of Mrs. Bradshaw, of Leek: a fine piscina and three sedilia still remain, and there is a monument to the Finney family of Compton Leek, and others to the Hollins family of Mossley, 1697—1738: and to Edward Arblaster esq. of Rownall, 1783; besides memorial windows to the family of Powys. The church was restored in 1865, under the superintendence of the late Sir G. G. Scott R.A. and a vestry added, at a cost of over £2,500, and in 1870 a choir-house was built, at a cost of £600; in 1881 the east wall of the chancel was decorated with paintings on wood panelling, from designs by G. G. Scott esq. M.A. as a memorial to the late Rev. John Sneyd M.A., F.S.A, by his widow and her daughter, Mrs. Carew Hunt: there are 308 sittings: in the churchyard is an ancient cross, which has been carefully restored. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1696, and marriages from 1754. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £14, net yearly value £210, including 117 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Rev. Alfred Francis Boucher M.A. of Kempsey, Worcestershire, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Alfred Herbert Boucher M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1849. Cheddleton brewery, paper works, and a flint mill are situated here. The Wake Sunday, properly the Sunday after St. Edward’s day, is postponed for a week, in consequence of Leek church being named after the same saint. Fairs are held at Cellarhead on May 5th and first Thursday in November. The County Lunatic Asylum for about 800 inmates is now (1895) in course of erection here, at a cost of about £200,000, from designs by Messrs. Giles, Gough and Trollope, architects, of London. Charities:-The curate receives £4 and the poor 24s. yearly, from the trustees of the late Miss Joliffe; the poor have also 20s. yearly, left by John Bagnall; 20s. by William Sneyd; £4 by John Fenton, and a few other small gifts; the late Colonel Powys, of Westwood, left the interest of £900 at the disposal of the incumbent for the time being for the poor of the parish, and the Rev. John Sneyd M.A. of Ashcombe Park, gave a cottage and garden for the benefit of the choir for ever. Ashcombe Park, the seat of Dryden Henry Sneyd esq. J.P. is a mansion of stone in the Grecian style, erected by William Sneyd esq. in 1806—10, on the site of Bothem Hall, the old manor house, and stands in an extensive well-wooded deer park, 4 miles south of Leek. Woodlands is the property of D. H. Sneyd esq. J.P. James Meakin esq. of Westwood Manor, Wetley Rocks, who is lord of the manor, and Dryden H. Sneyd esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The soil varies from light marl to black peat; subsoil, red sand. The chief crops are oats and potatoes, but the land is principally pasture. The common was inclosed in 1735. The area of the civil parish 6,951 acres of land and 66 of water; rateable value, £13,798; the population in 1891 was 1,772 in the civil and 1,097 in the ecclesiastical parish.
