Historical Description

EDINGALE is a parish and village, in a fertile valley, on the banks of the river Meese, which here separates the county from Derbyshire, 2 miles north-east from Elford and Haselour station on the Midland railway, 6 north-north-east from Tamworth, 9 south-south-west from Burton-upon-Trent and 8 east-north-east from Lichfield, in the Lichfield division of the county, North Offlow hundred, Tamworth petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Tamworth, Stafford archdeaconry and Lichfield diocese. The church of the Holy Trinity, rebuilt in 1881 at a cost of £1,910, is a structure of brick in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave and a small tower on the north side containing 2 bells: a clock was added in 1884 and since the rebuilding other additions have been made at a cost of £240: there are sittings for 127 persons. The register dates from the year 1573. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £107, including 45 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Lichfield, and held since 1883 by the Rev. William Guest Garland M.A. Queen’s College, Oxford. There are remains of an old Roman road passing through the village in the direction of Lullington, in Derbyshire. The Earl of Lichfield is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late Thomas Greene esq. the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, the Misses Smedley, Mr. Thomas Wright Stratton, the Misses Stratton and Mrs. Anson-Horton, of Catton Hall. The soil is marl; subsoil, clay and marl. The chief crops are wheat, oats, beans and barley. The area is 890 acres; rateable value, £1,122; the population in 1891 was 124.
