Historical Description

HINTS is a village and parish in a beautiful position in a vale beside a lofty eminence, the Roman road, Watling Street, passing through the parish, which is watered by the river Bourne: it is 4 miles north-west from Wilnecote station on the Midland railway, 4 south-west from Tamworth and 5 ½ south-east from Lichfield, in the Lichfield division of the county, South Offlow hundred, Tamworth petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Lichfield, archdeaconry of Stafford and diocese of Lichfield. The church of St. Bartholomew, built in 1882—3 on the site of the old church by the late James Chadwick esq. at a cost of £5,000, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, vestry, organ chamber on the north side, groined south porch and a bell gable over the chancel arch containing one bell: there are sittings for 130 persons. The register dates from the year 1558. The living, separated from Weeford in 1884, is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £61, net yearly value £200, including 4 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Chadwick, and held since 1888 by the Rev. William Thomas Baring Hayter M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. The vicarage house, which adjoins the church, was erected by the late Mr. Chadwick. Hints Hall, the seat of Mrs. Chadwick, is a large square mansion of red brick, in a secluded spot south of the village, overlooking a large well-wooded park and the river Bourne. Mrs. Chadwick, who is lady of the manor, and Abraham Briggs Foster esq. J.P., D.L. of Canwell Hall, are the chief landowners. The soil is various-clay, loamy and sandy; subsoil, red sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 1,834 acres; rateable value, £2,324; and the parish contained 238 inhabitants in 1891, chiefly employed in agriculture.
