Historical Description

Shareshill is a small village near Cannock, on the left of our road, belonging to the deanery of Penkridge. At the north and south entrance of this place are seen two square entrenchments, the area of the largest, about one rood; they are generally supposed to have been Roman encampments, which their proximity to the Watling-street road seems to favour. The body of the church was rebuilt about fifty years since; only the tower and a few monuments were preserved from the old church, which are of very old date, and on them are several curious inscriptions.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SHARESHILL is a parish 3 miles south-east from Four Ashes station on the Wolverhampton and Stafford line of the London and North Western railway, 5 ½ north from Wolverhampton and 5 south-east from Brewood, in the Western division of the county, East Cuttlestone hundred, Penkridge petty sessional division, Cannock union, Wolverhampton county court district, rural deanery of Penkridge, archdeaconry of Stafford and diocese of Lichfield. The church of St. Mary (originally St. Luke), rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, about 1748, is a plain building of brick and stone, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave, south porch and a Perpendicular embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 4 bells and a clock: the chancel is separated from the nave by an open arcade of 3 arches: a large altar-tomb, with effigies to Sir Humphrey Swinnerton and Cassandra, his wife, which formerly stood in a chantry chapel on the north side of the church, was broken up when the present building was erected, but the effigies were placed in two windows, one on the north and the other on the south side of the church, where they still are: there are 275 sittings, 93 being free. The register dates from the year 1565. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 22 acres of glebe, in the gift of Lord Hatherton, and held since 1870 by the Rev. Robert Butcher. There is a parochial library of 200 volumes, supported by voluntary contributions. The charities of the parish amount to about £9 yearly, of which £2 5s. belongs to Saredon. On the north-east side of the village are vestiges of two encampments, supposed, from their square form, to have been of Roman construction. Lord Hatherton C.M.G. is lord of the manor. The land is held by a variety of different owners, many of the farmers owning portions of their farms. The soil is of a light gravelly character, adapted for barley and turnips. The parish contains 1,985 acres, including the hamlets of Great Saredon, 2 miles north, and Little Saredon, 1 north; rateable value of Shareshill, £1,885; rateable value of Great and Little Saredon, £2,698; the population in 1891 was 350 in Shareshill and 269 in Great and Little Saredon.

Parochial School (mixed), with residence for master, built in 1871, for 130 children; average attendance, 112.
