Historical Description
Aldborough, or Aldeburgh, a sea-port town, both strongly and pleasantly situated in the valley of Slaughden, having a grand and an extensive view of the German Ocean on the east, and the river Ald on the west. It is a commodious harbour for seamen and fishermen, upon which account it is fully inhabited by these sort of people. It is a town corporate, governed by two bailiffs, twelve capital burgesses, and twenty-four inferior officers. It sends two members to parliament: it has a market weekly on Saturday, and a fair annually on the first Tuesday in Lent. It had formerly three streets in a row, and nearly a mile in length; but is now reduced to two streets by the encroachment of the sea: it is reckoned by the physicians to be one of the most healthy places along the coast, and as remarkable for longevity, being subject to cooling and refreshing breezes from the sea, on which account a great deal of company resort to the town in summer for the benefit of their health and sea-bathing, to which the pleasantness of the spot invites; and is growing into much repute. The shore is also much admired for its evenness and regular declivity for the bathing machines, which are upon a remarkably safe and commodious construction. The hills at the back of the town are likewise much esteemed for the pleasant, walks, and for the fine and beautiful prospects of the surrounding country for many miles.
There are no manufactories except the drying of red sprats, which are caught and dried in great abundance, and exported to Holland. It is equally famous for soals and lobsters, which are caught in great quantities, and far surpass any other for fine flavour. Fish of all sorts is in great plenty, as well as every other commodity.
Aldborough is situated 94 miles from London, and the population in 1821 consisted of 258 houses, and 1212 persons.
A plan of the town, as it appeared in 1559, proves it to have been a place of considerable magnitude, and represents the church as being more than ten times its present distance from the shore. From the same plan it is evident, there were then denes or downs of some extent, similar to those at Yarmouth between the town and the sea; but which have been long ago swallowed up. Aldborough, depopulated and impoverished by the encroachments of the sea, was till within the last thirty years hastening to complete decay; but several families of distinction wishing for a greater degree of privacy and retirement than is usual at a watering place, having made this town their summer residence, has totally changed its appearance. Instead of deep sands that once led to this place, we now approach it by excellent turnpike-roads; and in lieu of the clay-built cottages, and their frequent concomitants of dirt and misery, we now see many neat and tasteful mansions, the comfortable retreat of persons of rank or fortune. The manners and morals of the lower classes are likewise very much improved; and the lines of Mr. Crabbe, who is a native of this place, have long ceased to be applicable. ‘
Here joyless roam a wild amphibious race,
With sullen woe display’d in every face;
Who far from civil arts and social, fly
And scowl at strangers with suspicious eye.
The church is a good ancient structure, though very much intermixed with modern work. Some stones in the church-yard appear to be of considerable antiquity, though there are no remarkable monuments in the interior. Here is a magnificent and extensive view of the ocean; and near the church is a marine villa, upon the Italian model, by L. Vernon, esq. which is much admired for a singularly beautiful octagonal room. On the brow of the hill at the same end of the town, is the mansion of the Hon. Percy Wyndham; near this is a romantic cassino, the favourite summer residence of the Marquis of Salisbury; and C. F. Crespigny, esq. has a seat at the further extremity of the terrace.
The strand at Aldborough is not more than forty or fifty yards from most of the lodging-houses; and during ebb-tide, and frequently for weeks together, is peculiarly adapted for walking and bathing.
The magnificent terrace on the summit of the hill behind the town, not only commands the boundless expanse of the ocean, including Aldborough and Hollesley bays, which are richly studded with their moving treasures, and separated from each other by Orfordness; but also the view of a rich country through which flows the capacious Ore, adding beauty of no common kind. This majestic river, after approaching within a few hundred yards of the sea, south of the town, suddenly turns towards Orford, below which place it suddenly discharges itself into the ocean. The width and depth of its channel, and the easy flow of its tides, render it peculiarly adapted for pleasure-yachts and boats, several of which are kept by the inhabitants of the town, which is well supplied with the necessaries, and even the luxuries of the table.
The following may be taken as a well-merited compliment to this charming river.
Orwell, delightful stream! whose waters flow,
Fring’d with luxurious beauty, to the main!
Amid thy woodlands taught, the muse would fain
On thee her grateful eulogy bestow;
Smooth and majestic though thy current glide,
As bustling commerce ploughs thy liquid plain,
Though grac’d with loveliness thy verdant side,
While all around enchantment seems to reign;
These glories still with filial love I taste,
And feel their praise; yet thou hast one beside,
To me more sweet, for on thy banks reside
Friendship and Truth combin’d, whose union chaste
Has sooth’d my soul, and these shall bloom sublime
When fade the fleeting charms of nature and of time.
ALDEBURGH is a municipal borough, parish and bathing-place, pleasantly situated in the valley of Slaughden, sheltered by a steep hill, with the river Alde on the west, whence the town derives its name, and is the terminus of a branch line of the Great Eastern railway from Saxmundham, 99 miles from London, 24 north-east from Ipswich and 7 south-east from Saxmundham, in the North Eastern division of the county, Plomesgate union and hundred, Blything petty sessional division, Framlingham and Saxmundham county court district, rural deanery of Orford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The river Alde runs south by Orford and parallel with the sea for about 10 miles before entering the German ocean; it is tidal for 20 miles. A considerable fleet of fishing vessels belongs to this place, some of which run as far north as the Faroe Islands and Iceland. Immense quantities of sprats and other fish are landed by the long-shore boats and forwarded to London, 70 tons having been caught in one day.
The town was incorporated by charter in the reign of Charles I. and its government vested in two bailiffs, ten capital and twenty-four inferior burgesses, with other officers. The borough was included in Schedule I. of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1883 (46 and 47 Vict. c. 18), and in pursuance of that Act the then existing corporation petitioned the Privy Council for a new charter applying the Municipal Corporations Acts to the borough, and a scheme was accordingly settled by the Privy Council under Part XI. of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1882, by which the old corporation was abolished and its property vested in the corporation elected under the fresh charter; this charter incorporating the inhabitants and extending the Municipal Corporations Acts to the parish and former borough was granted 20th July, 1885. The present corporation consists of a mayor, four aldermen and twelve councillors; its revenues are about £600 yearly, arising from rents of marshes and leasehold building estate and sundry investments; at present only a small rate is levied either for borough or sanitary purposes. Separate petty sessions have been granted to the borough, and a court is held every fortnight. The Lord Chancellor has also given a Commission of the Peace to two resident magistrates. The insignia of the Corporation comprise four early silver maces and a handsome gold chain and badge, presented for the use of the mayors by members of the Garrett family upon the passing of the new charter. The borough returned two members to Parliament from the 14 Eliz. (1572) until the passing of the Reform Act of 1832 (2 and 3 Wm. IV. &. 45), by which it was disfranchised. The town is lighted with gas from works erected in 1858, the property of a company, and supplied with water from a company from works established in 1870, and including a water tower, which stands on the Park estate. The church of SS. Peter and Paul, standing on the top of a hill westward of the town, is an edifice of flint with stone dressings, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the tower and north aisle were restored in 1881—2 and the chancel, nave and south aisle in 1891: the whole edifice has since been covered with lead and fitted with hot water apparatus: a memorial window was erected in 1891 by the Hon. Mrs. Maule, in memory of two daughters, and there is another erected in 1882 by Sir Francis Roxburgh Q.C. to his 1st wife, d. 1876, and one to Mrs. Kendall, d. 1851: among the many fine monuments is one to the poet Crabbe, borne here 24 Dec. 1754, and died Tector of Trowbridge, Wilts, 8 Feb. 1832; it consists of a tableted pedestal, surmounted by a bust of the poet, executed by Mr. Thurlow, of Saxmundham: there is also a replica hero of the memorial erected in Westminster Abbey to the Right Hon. Henry Fawcett P.C., M.P. d. 6 Nov. 1884 and a tablet to seven lifeboat men who lost their lives Dec. 7th 1899: the organ was erected in 1884, at a cost of nearly £400: there are 840 sittings; the churchyard, from its elevated situation, commands a fine view of the North sea. The register commences in the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £175, including 11 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of T. F. C. Vernon-Wentworth esq. and held since 1874 by the Rev. Henry Thompson B.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, rural dean of Orford, hon. Canon of Norwich and surrogate. A mortuary was built in 1886, adjoining the graveyard, at the expense of the parish. There is a Baptist chapel, holding 100, and a Union Congregational chapel, erected in 1822 and seating 400. The Wesleyan chapel is a small iron building. Several small charities, amounting in all to £13, are distributed in bread and coal to the poor: a benefaction of £100, given by Captain Hawes, of London and Aldeburgh, is for binding out two apprentices. The Moot Hall, or Town Hall, on the beach, is a small but remarkable specimen of an Early Tudor building of brick and flint with timber insertions, and is two stories in height, the upper floor being reached by an exterior staircase; the building, the wood-work of which is richly carved, was restored in 1855 under the superintendence of the late Mr. R. N. Phipson, architect, and is used for the meetings of the Corporation. The county police station is used as a court house. The public subscription library and reading room, on the Parade, contains many standard works and has a good supply of daily and weekly newspapers and is open to visitors. Adjoining the library is the Jubilee Hall, erected in 1888 by subscription and seating 700 persons. A lifeboat named the “Aldebrough,” given in 1890 by an anonymous donor, was lost on the 7th Dec. 1899: at present a temporary boat is stationed on the beach near the reading room. The Adair Lodge of Freemasons (No. 936) holds its meetings in the White Lion hotel on the first Friday in every month. The Odd Fellows’ Lodge (Ocean’s Pride) now (1900) numbers 255 members and meets at the reading room. There is a good local golf club now consisting of over 200 members: there is also a tennis ground of about one acre: the Club house has been enlarged and new rooms for ladies added. There is also a Yacht club consisting of 100 members. Aldeburgh Mere is a large but shallow lake, north of the town, on which during the winter season valuable specimens of different wild birds may be met with. The Aldeburgh Park estate, the fee simple of which belongs to the Corporation, has been laid out for building purposes with a road direct from the railway station to the south end of the town, and is now under the management of the Aldeburgh Land Company. Little Casino is the property of Sir Hugh Edward Adair bart. of Flixton Hall, Great Casino is the residence of Col. Arthur John Bethel Thellusson J.P. and Alde House of Mrs. Garrett. T. F. C. Vernon-Wentworth esq. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner, has also a marine residence, called Aldeburgh Lodge, to the north of the town and a shooting box at Blackheath, in Friston parish, some three miles up the river. In this parish the crag formation peculiar to Suffolk and Norfolk is very fully developed. The parish contains 1,608 acres of land, 21 of water, 74 of tidal water and 115 of foreshore; rateable value, £9,195; the population in 1871 was 1,990 and in 1881 was 2,106, and in 1891, 2,159.
