Historical Description

ALDERTON is a village and parish 1 mile west from the North Sea, 7 miles from Melton station on the Ipswich and Yarmouth section of the Great Eastern railway and 8 south-east from Woodbridge, or by ferry 6 ½ near the mouth of the navigable river Deben, in the South Eastern division of the county, Wilford hundred, Woodbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Wilford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Andrew is a building of flint in the Late Decorated style, consisting of chancel (added in 1864), nave, north porch and tower, now ruinous, but containing one bell: there are 386 sittings. The register dates from the year 1690. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £443, including 12 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Ely Goodwyn Archer esq. and the Bishop of Norwich, the latter having every fourth turn, and held since 1856 by the Rev. Charles Goodwyn Archer MA. of Jesus College, Cambridge, and J.P. for the county. There is a Congregational chapel, seating 350. Sir W. C. Quitter bart., who is lord of the manor, Lord Rendlesham and Charles Ely esq. are the principal land owners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, loam and crag. Coprolites were extensively dug here, and antediluvian shells and fossils are numerous. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 2,575 acres; rateable value, £2,331; the population in 1891 was 527.
