Historical Description

ASSINGTON is a parish, 4 ½ miles north-east from Bures station on the Great Eastern railway, 5 south-east from Sudbury, in the Southern division of the county, Babergh hundred, Boxford petty sessional division, Sudbury union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Edmund, beautifully situated in the centre of the park adjacent to Assington Hall, is an edifice of flint, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled western tower 75 feet high, erected at a cost of about £3,000, and containing 6 bells, two of which were added in 1889 by public subscription: the roof of the chancel has been renewed in oak, with carved bosses, and the floor relaid: the pulpit, reading-desk and lectern are also of carved oak: there are two ancient brasses and monuments to Robert Gurdon, dated 1571; John Gurdon, 1623; Brampton Gurdon, 1648, and others of this family; and a memorial window, placed in 1884, to John Dyer, d. 4 Sept. 1873 and Ann his wife, d. 21 Aug. 1884: the church affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £300, with 50 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Sir William Brampton Gurdon K.C.M.G., C.B., M.P. and held since 1894 by the Rev. Edmonde Herbert Christopher Stephenson MA. of Exeter College, Oxford. The charities include one of four bushels of wheat at Christmas and four at Easter, left by Mr. Winterflood in 1598, and payable out of Avely Hall farm; £16 given by the Gurdon family in 1665 for the purchase of shirts &c. for the poor, invested in the purchase of acres of land in Aldfleet meadow, now let at £2 10s. yearly; 1690, £1 6s. yearly rent-charge, left by Mr. Thomas Alston; £100 left by John Gurdon esq. in 1777 for the purpose of sending 2 boys to the Grammar school at Boxford; and £2 15s. left by John Gurdon esq. in 1793. There are two benefit societies here, originated by John Gurdon esq. and worked on the co-operative principle, jointly occupying 351 acres of land. One of these, the Agricultural Association Limited, was founded in 1830, and has now (1900) 281 members; secretary, Robert Taylor: the other, known as the Agricultural Co-operative Society, and founded in 1883, has 21 members. There is also an Industrial Co-operative Society Limited, and a branch of the Stoke and Melford Club for relief in sickness and old age. Assington Hall, the seat of Sir William Brampton Gurdon K.C.M.G., C.B., M.P. is an ancient mansion, in a park of 75 acres. The Gurdon family originated from Gourdon near Cahors, and the name of one knight of this family appears on the roll of Battle Abbey. Sir Adam de Gurdon was, in 1272, made keeper of Wolmer Forest, Hants: subsequently the family settled in London, next in Essex, and eventually Robert Gurdon esq. who died in 1577, purchased the Assington estate from Sir Miles Corbet. John Gurdon esq. M.P. for Suffolk in the Long Parliament 1640—60, was appointed a member of the High Court of Justice for the trial of Charles I. but did not attend it; at the Hall are preserved five free pardons accorded to several members of this family at the Restoration. Sir W. Brampton Gurdon is lord of the manor, lay impropriator and chief landowner. The soil is mixed; subsoil, loam and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, oats &c. The area is 2,997 acres; rateable value, £2,761; the population in 1891 was 591.

National School (mixed), erected in 1844 & enlarged in 1862 & 1873 for 120 children, and a new class room added in 1899 for 40 children; average attendance, 80.
