Historical Description

BACTON is a parish and considerable and well-built village, one mile from Finningham station on the Great Eastern railway, 6 north from Stowmarket and 87 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hartismere hundred, petty sessional division and union, Stowmarket county court district, rural deanery of South Hartismere, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a noble edifice of flint, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles; it consists of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with small spire, containing 5 bells: the nave has an elaborately carved and decorated double hammer-beam roof, the eastern bay being richly colored: in the chancel is a stained window to the Rev. Edward Burton Barker, rector, d. 22 Feb. 1858, and there are several tablets to the Pretyman family; the church has been thoroughly restored and reseated with open benches, and now affords 293 sittings, all of which are free. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £475, including 53 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. T. Stantial D.C.L, of Bury St. Edmunds, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Arthur Evered Stantial MA. of Merton College, Oxford. The parish room, erected in 1893, at a cost of £350, is a structure of brick, seating 150 persons; it is under the management of the rector and is used as a men’s club as well as for meetings and services. The charities include Dane’s gift of 13s. 4d. and Warren’s dole of 8s. and also the rent of the Town lands, all of which are now distributed according to a scheme framed by the Charity Commissioners. There are 52 acres of land belonging to the parish now (1900) let for £61 a year, half of which is applied to the repairs of the church and the rest in the aid of the poor. Capt. Ernest George Pretyman M.P. of Orwell Park, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is mixed; subsoil, chiefly clay. Crops of the usual kind. The area is 2,285 acres; rateable value, £3,212; the population in 1891 was 646.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 17 July, 1871; Charles Hector Woods, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), with master’s house, erected & opened in 1875, at a cost of about £700; it will hold 150 children; average attendance, 140.
