Historical Description

SADINGHAM (or Baddingham) is a parish and large but scattered village on the river Alde, 4 miles north-north-east from Framlingham terminal station on a branch of the Great Eastern railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hoxne hundred and union, Framlingham petty sessional division, Framlingham and Saxmundham county court district, rural deanery of Hoxne, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. John the Baptist is an edifice in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells; the stone font is ornamented with sculptured representations of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church; in the chancel is a tomb, with reclining effigies under an enriched stone canopy, to William Cotton esq. ob. 1616, and his wife Catherine, ob. 1621; at the base are two kneeling figures: there are several ancient brasses, and a marble tablet to the Rev. T. Barrington, a former rector, d. 1757: the chancel was restored in 1879 and stalls added for the choir; the nave was at the same time reseated, and four stained windows inserted as memorials to the Rev. R. Gorton, rector, d. 1873; his wife, d. 1872; the wife of the late rector, Mrs. R. G. Gorton, d. 1875; and to John Stanford esq. of White House, Badingham: in 1890 the tower was restored and 3 of the 5 bells recast, the whole peal re-hung and new fitted, and the porch restored at a cost of £220: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £500, including 29 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Rev. Robert Gregson Gorton MA. and held since 1898 by the Rev. Foster Stable Barry MA. of Pembroke College, Cambridge. There is a Congregational chapel, and a small Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1836, and seating about 50. There are three manors, viz:-The manor of Badingham Hall, of which John Kendal Brooke esq. of Sibton Park, is lord, that of Colston Hall, and the manor of Oakenhill Hall, which belongs to the trustees of Mrs. Collins. The principal landowners are Lord Rendlesham, William Peckover esq. George Martin esq. of Clare, W. N. B. Garrard esq. Mrs. Moxon, the trustees of Mrs. Collins, Mr. Wm. Bradley Grimwood, of Buxhall and the rector. The soil is clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, turnips and pasture. The parish contains 3,204 acres; rateable value, £2,074; the population in 1891 was 598.
