The church of SS. Peter and Paul is an edifice of flint, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, embattled nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, with small spire comtaining a clock and 6 bells; the stained east window, erected by Mrs. Hutchings, is a memorial to her first husband, W. Dunlap esq. and her second husband, Lieut G. Hutchings, both buried in India: and there are similar windows to James Dunlap esq. to Sir Henry Charles Blake bart. d. 22 Jan. 1880, and to the Rev. Arthur Philip Dunlap B.D. rector here 1852—90; two others are filled with ancient stained glass: there are two hagioscopes, and these, as well as the steps to the rood loft, are in good preservation: the monuments include one of alabaster to Thomas Reade (1657) and Brighta his wife (1653), with their effigies, in a kneeling posture, on each side of an altar; underneath is a smaller altar with kneeling figures of their children, three on either side: in 1853 the church was repaired and seated with open benches of oak adorned with carved poppy heads, and now affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £380, including 39 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of St. John’s College, Oxford, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Frederick Edward Warren B.D. formerly fellow of that college. There are several ancient charities given by William Beeton and others, which now forms the town estate; under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners framed in 1883, it is vested in ten trustees and the income is equally divided between the church, education, and the poor; Mrs. Garrard’s benefaction is for poor widows and Mr. Jeffe’s consists of a dinner given to the aged poor on Christmas day. Money was also left in 1895, by the Rev. A. P. Dunlap B.D. formerly rector, for an annual dinner for 20 poor people. The Baptist chapel here was built in 1824, and there is a Primitive Methodist chapel, rebuilt in 1894. On Bow Beck Heath are some barrows. The Manor House, built in 1884—85, is an edifice of red brick standing in a small park and is the property and residence of Sir Patrick James Graham Blake bart. J.P. lord of the manor of Bardwell Hall. The Earl of Albemarle is lord of the manor of Wick. The principal landowners are Sir P. J. Graham Blake bart. the Duke of Grafton E.G., C.B. Arthur Maitland Wilson esq. of Stowlangtoft Hall, Mark Mayes David Plummer, and the trustees of the late Mr. George Addison. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 3,173 acres of land, including the hamlet of Bow Beck, miles to the north; rateable value, £2,209; the population in 1891 was 734.
