Historical Description

BARHAM is a parish and widely-scattered village 1 mile north-east from Claydon station, on the Bury and Ipswich section of the Great Eastern railway, 4 south-east from Needham Market and 5 north-west from Ipswich, in the South Eastern division, of the county, Bosmere hundred, Bosmere and Claydon petty sessional division and union, Ipswich county court district, rural deanery of Claydon, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a large building of flint, brick and stone, consisting of Chancel, nave, side Chapel, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 4 bells: in the chapel, which belongs to the Middleton family, are marble tablets to members of that family, and there are monuments to Sir Richard Southwell kt. dated 1640, and the Bacon family, dated 1618—29, and a fine brass dated 1514, to Robert Southwell and Cecil his wife: all the windows are stained: the church was restored by the Dowager Lady Middleton in 1865, and affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £290, with 42 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Oldman Carter esq. of Wereham Hall, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Henry Carter MA. of Clare College, Cambridge. Shrubland Hall, 2 miles north from Claydon and formerly the seat of Sir Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal to Elizabeth, is now the seat of Lord De Saumarez MA., J.P.; it stands on a bold eminence, overlooking the vale of the navigable Gipping, in an extensive and well-wooded park of nearly 300 acres stocked with deer, and has fine terraced gardens beautifully laid out and covering 40 acres: in 1830 considerable additions were made to the house by the late Sir W. F. F. Middleton, from designs by Sir Charles Barry: Barham Hall is the residence of Major-General Henry Pye Phillipps J.P. The workhouse for the union of Bosmere and Claydon stands in this parish: for particulars of union, see Needham Market. Major-General Henry Pye Phillipps, who is lord of the manor, and Lord De Saumarez are the chief landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, chalk and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, peas and beans. The area is 1,807 acres; rateable value, £2,447; the population is 1891 was 373, including 85 officers and inmates in the Bosmere and Claydon Union Workhouse.
