Historical Description

BARKING is a parish and village, 2 miles south-west from Needham Market station on the Great Eastern railway and the same distance from the navigable Gippinig and 8 ½ north-west from Ipswich, in the South Eastern division of the county, hundred of Bosmere, Bosmere and Claydon petty sessional division and union, county court district of Stowmarket, rural deanery of Bosmere, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. This is the mother parish of Needham Market. The church of St. Mary is a noble edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch and an embattled western tower, rebuilt in 1870, and containing 5 bells: there are piscinae in the chancel and north aisle: in the church are several tablets to members of the Crowley family; the ancient stone font is curiously carved and has a very richly-carved oak canopy: the wood carving in this church is generally of an elaborate character, especially the oak chancel screen and those in the north and south aisles, the panels of the south, door and the vestry door: in the south aisle is an old helmet and some carved work, apparently part of a shield: the massive silver communion plate includes two flagons, chalice and paten and one alms dish, all of very fine work, and presented to this parish in 1769 by the late Mrs. Thedosia Crowley: the church affords 600 sittings. The register dates from the year 1503. The living is a rectory, with that of Darmsden annexed, joint net income £521, with 6 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the representatives of the late Countess Ashburnham, and held since 1892 by the Rev. James Wilson MA. of Jesus College, Cambridge, and rural dean of Stow. In the rectory grounds are three majestic cedar trees, which were planted in 1712. Here are chalk pits. Barking Hall, a large mansion of red brick, near the church, the property of the Earl of Ashburnham, is now (1900) occupied by Henry Hoare esq. The Earl, who is lord of the manor, and Lord De Saumarez, of Shrubland Park, are the principal landowners. The soil is good; subsoil, principally clay and loam. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The parish comprises an area of 3,122 acres of land; there are about 300 acres of woodland and a common of 50 acres, and 12 of water; rateable value, including Needham Market and Darmsden, £7,359; the population of the parish in 1891, exclusive of Needham Market, was 417.
