Historical Description
BARNBY (or Barnaby) is a parish and village, pleasantly situated 4 miles east from Beccles station, on the Great Eastern railway, 6 south-west from Lowestoft and 1 from the navigable Waveney, in the Northern division of the county, Mutford and Lothingland petty sessional division, hundred and union of Mutford, county court district of Lowestoft, rural deanery of Lothingland, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. Here is a siding station for goods, erected in 1890 by the Great Eastern railway. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient edifice of flint, with a thatched roof, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: in the wall of the nave near the south door is an ancient locker, formerly used for the processional cross, and remarkable as being the only known one possessing a door: the church was restored and reseated in 1882, at a cost of £250, and affords 90 sittings. The register dates from the year 1554. The living is a rectory, consolidated with the vicarage of Mutford, joint net yearly value £213, with 30 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Master and fellows of Cains College, Cambridge, and held since 1893 by the Rev. John James Dyson MA. formerly scholar of that college. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1881 at a cost of £800, will seat 230 people. Here are the iron foundry and agricultural implement manufactory of Mr. William Evered Wigg. A few acres of land, allotted to the parishioners in lieu of their right of cutting furze, are now let for about £12 a year, which sum is distributed in coals during the winter. The parish contains marshes under drainage and a broad. The trustees of the late Richard Henry Reeve esq. of Lowestoft, who are lords of the manor, the trustees of the late Rev. J. Reeve, the trustees of the late Colonel Reeve, the Rev. William Hale Andrews MA. of Carlton Colville, near Lowestoft, and William Rix Seago esq. of Custom House buildings, Lowestoft, are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed, heavy and light; subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, roots, beans and peas. The area is 1,083 acres of land, 10 of water, 5 of tidal water and 10 of foreshore; assessable value, £1,695 10s.; the population in 1891 was 313.
