Historical Description
BARNINGHAM is a village and parish 8 miles south-east from Thetford, 7 ½ south from Harling Road station on the Ely and Wymondham line of the Great Eastern railway, and 11 north-east from Bury St. Edmunds, in the North Western division of the county, Blackbourn hundred and petty sessional division, Thetford union and county court district, rural deanery of Blackburne, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient structure of flint, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, excepting the north window in the chancel, which is Early English, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 3 bells: the benches are of oak, handsomely carved: there are some stained windows in the chancel, and a carved reredos embellished with a copy by Miss Edwards of Leonardo da Vinci’s picture of the Last Supper: the steps to the rood loft remain, and are in good preservation: in the porch are remains of a holy water stoup: the church was restored in 1877 and affords 240 sittings, of which 190 are free. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a discharged rectory, with that of Coney Weston annexed, joint net yearly value £450, including 26 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Rev. James Edwards MA. and held since 1876 by the Rev. Arthur William Edwards MA. of University College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1854, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1862.
The town estate consists of 4 cottages and 17 acres of land, the rents of which are devoted to the church with the exception of £1 1s. yearly, which sum with the rent of half an acre of land given by William Fuller in 1622 is distributed in bread: the poor’s allotment of 21 acres, awarded to them in lieu of their right of cutting fuel on the open lands, is let and the rents distributed in coals: in the village is an almshouse for two poor widows who are parishioners. The trustees of the late Cornell Henry Fison esq. of Ford Place, Thetford, Norfolk, who are lords of the manor, and the trustees of the late William Robert Bevan esq. of Plumpton Hall, Whepstead, are the chief landowners. The soil is mixed, mostly heavy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 1,586 acres; rateable value, £2,040; the population in 1891 was 405.
