Historical Description

BARTON MILLS is a parish and village in the North-Western division of the county, Lackford hundred and petty sessional division, Mildenhall union and county court district, rural deanery of Mildenhall, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely: the village is pleasantly situated 4 miles south-east from Kennet station on the Cambridge and Bury branch of the Great Eastern railway, on the high road from Norwich to London, about 1 mile south-east from Mildenhall and 8 north-east from Newmarket: the river Lark skirts the parish on the north, separating it from Mildenhall. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to Philip Fuller, d. 1866; there is another to Jane Fuller, d. 1867, and one, placed in 1895, to the Rev. William Buckland Lott MA. rector here 1863—95, and in a window in the north aisle are the arms of John de Dreux, duke of Brittany, created Earl of Richmond (6 July, 1268) by Henry III.: other windows contain fragments of richly stained glass: in the chancel is a double piscina and sedilia, and the sacrarium has been re-floored with mosaic as a memorial to Miss Susanna Fuller: there are monuments to William Glascock, 1718; Thomas Thoresby, 1790; to the Gataker family and to the Rev. Charles Chichester, formerly rector of this parish, d. 1858; there is also a brass to Sarah Fuller (d. 1869), whose sister, Miss Susanna Fuller, erected the organ chamber in 1870: the pulpit is of finely carved oak, and the octagonal stone font is also ornamented with carving: the ends of some of the ancient open seats in the nave exhibit curiously carved devices and figures, and in the church is preserved a good iron-bound oak chest: in 1866 a new roof was put on the nave at a cost of £400, £200 of which was left by the late Miss S. Fuller: there are about 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1663. The living is a rectory, net income £290, with 186 acres of glebe and two residences, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Charles Henry Lacon MA. of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. There is Baptist chapel, erected in 1844. James Davies, parson, by will dated Nov. 4th, 1692, left for ever a plot of ground in the parish of Mildenhall to the poor of the parish of Barton Mills, the rent of which now (1900) amounts to £4 yearly. A sum of £500 was left by the late Miss S. Fuller, to be invested and the interest given to the poor of the parish. The Rev. Thomas Malabar, formerly rector of this parish, left by will in 1732 a parcel of land to the rector of the parish for the time being, who should distribute from the same 20s. to such poor of the parish as he might think fit. Here are extensive flour mills and maltings of Parker Brothers (Mildenhall) Limited, worked both by steam and water; the modern roller system, on the latest improved principles, has been introduced, and the mills are lighted by electricity. The land is all freehold. The Marquess of Bristol and the rector are the principal landowners. The soil is various, light and sandy on the hills; the-subsoil is chalky. The crops are of the usual kind-wheat, barley, turnips and mangold-wurtzel. The area is 1,878 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £2,380; the population in 1801 was 407.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 12 March, 1888; O. F. Read, Mildenhall, clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), built in 1845, for 90 children; average attendance, 53.
