Historical Description

BAWDSEY is a parish and village, between the sea-coast and the river Deben, 9 miles south-east from the Great Eastern railway station at Melton and 10 south-east from Woodbridge, or by ferry 8 ½, in the South Eastern division of the county, Wilford hundred, Woodbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Wilford, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich. The village is in view of the sea and there is a ferry across the river (4 miles) to Felixstowe. The church of St. Mary the Virgin was burned down in 1842; but the embattled western stone tower, supposed to be of the 12th century, remains, although reduced in height from 90 to 60 feet; it contains one bell: the church, rebuilt in very simple style, consists of nave only, and affords 200 sittings, 100 being free. The register dates from the year 1744. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £110, with 2 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1847 by the Rev. Allott Tighe-Gregory MA., LL.B, of Trinity College, Dublin. A Wesleyan chapel was erected in 1886. The Reading-room, erected in 1886, at the sole expense of Sir William Cuthbert Quilter bart. M.P. is managed by a Committee. Bawdsey Manor, a fine modern mansion, situated on an eminence and commanding a splendid view of the sea, is the seat of Sir William Cuthbert Quilter bart. M.P., D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor, and Bawdsey Hall is the residence of his agent and farm steward. Lord Rendlesham, Lord Huntingfield, Sir. W. C. Quilter; bart. M.P. and Edward Brooke esq. of Ufford, are the principal landowners. The cliffs here are celebrated for their fossil remains. The soil is loamy; subsoil, crag and loam. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 1,630 acres of land, 6 of water, 54 of tidal water and 211 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,328; the population in 1891 was 462.
