Historical Description

Baylham brings us back to the high road. About the year 1300 this was the lordship of John de Burnaville, and afterwards belonged to his descendants till near 1400. About 1450 it came to John Andrews, and, by the marriage of his daughter, to Thomas Windsor, esq. Afterwards it became the possession of their son, Sir Andrew Windsor, of Stanwell, afterwards Lord Windsor. It now belongs to Mr. Acton.

BAYLHAM is a parish and village 2 ½ miles north-west from Claydon station, on the Bury and Ipswich line of the Great Eastern railway, 3 south from Needham Market, and 1 mile west from the navigable river Gipping, in the South Eastern division of the county, Bosmere hundred, Bosmere and Claydon petty sessional division and union, Ipswich county court distract, rural deanery of Bosmere, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Peter is a building of stone and flint in the Gothic​​​​​ style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the church was restored in 1870, with the addition of transepts, at a cost of £1,500, and a memorial east window erected to the Rev. William Colvile MA. rector from 1828: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1661. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £218, including 40 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. Anna Barry, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Wolstan Dixie Churchill B.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Lord De Saumarez is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The chief crops are wheat, barley and peas. The subsoil is gravel and chalk. The area is 1,349 acres of strong clayey land and 8 of water; rateable value, £1,964; the population in 1891 was 288.
