The church of St. Mary, standing about half a mile from the main road from Ipswich to Yarmouth through Saxmundham, is a structure of flint with stone dressings in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, north transept, vestry, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells: in the church is a monument to Sir Edward Duke bart. of Benhall, a memorial to Mr. Edward Hollond and three brasses to members of the Duke family, circa 1600: the transept, with vestry, were built at the sole expense of the Rev. Edmund Hollond MA. d. 1884: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £144, including 6 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Edmund Robert Hollond esq. and held since 1891 by the Rev. George Herbert Thompson. This place was for many years the seat of the Duke family, baronets, the estate having been originally purchased in 1598 by Edwd. Duke esq. of Brampton and Shadingfield, whose grandson, Edward, was created a baronet, 16 July, 1661, but the title became extinct on the death of the 3rd baronet, 25 Aug. 1732. Benhall Lodge, built in 1810 by the late Edward Hollond esq. but partly burnt down in 1885 and subsequently re-erected, is situated in a beautifully-wooded park of about 150 acres, and is the seat of Edmund Robert Hollond esq. The parish contains 2,160 acres; rateable value, £3,427; the population in 1891 was 588.

The late Sir Edward Duke bart. left the sum of £1,000, in 1736, for the building of a Free school & support of the master in this parish, & £500 were also left by Mr. Edward Hollond in 1829 for the purpose of increasing the salary of the master & for repairs of the house. A charge of £5 annually on an estate at Saxmundham, now belonging to W. E. Long esq. was left by the late William Cobbold esq. for the education of 4 poor children from the parish of Saxmundham.
