Historical Description

Bildeston, or Bilston, a small town, meanly built. It is situated sixty-three miles from London, and appears to have been more populous than it is at present, which is owing to the decay of the woollen manufacture that formerly flourished here. The church is a very good building, upon a hill on the west side of the town, near which is the mansion of the late. Bartholomew Beal, esq. Besides the parish church, there was formerly a chapel of St. Leonard, in which divine service was performed before the Reformation, on account of the distance of the church from the town. Bildeston has a mean market on Wednesdays, and the town consisted, according to the late return, of 121 houses, and 814 inhabitants.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BILDESTON is a small town and parish, 6 miles north-by-west from Hadleigh terminal station, 7 east from Lavenham station on the Bury and Marks Tey line of the Great Eastern railway, and 10 north-east from Sudbury, in the Southern division of the county, hundred and union of Cosford, Hadleigh petty sessional division and county court district, Hadleigh rural deanery, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Mary, about a quarter of a mile from the town, is a large and handsome structure of flint with stone dressings, in the Early Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave with lofty clerestory, aisles, south porch with parvise or priest’s chamber over and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to Rear-Admiral Cockburn; two other stained windows in the chancel were inserted by the late rector and his brothers in 1867: there is a brass dated 1509, and a mural brass in the chancel placed in 1885 by his brother officers to the memory of Capt. C. L. Walter, of the 1st Royal Irish Rifles: the chancel was restored in 1883, when it was refloored and furnished with stone sedilia and choir stalls of oak: in 1886 the nave and south aisle were repaved and reseated with oak benches: in 1897 the church was relighted throughout at a cost of £50, and in 1899 the south chapel was enclosed and made into a new vestry, at a cost of £50: there are 550 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £228, including 53 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of London, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Henry Sherlock B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. A Baptist chapel was erected by subscription in 1844. A yearly sum of £2 10s. arising from Smock meadow, is distributed to poor widows of this parish. There is also land of the annual value of about £20 for the repairs of the church. The clock tower, erected in 1864, by subscription, in the centre of the Market place, is a structure of red and white brick, on an arched base, and is surmounted by an open bell-turret with spire. Here is a fire brigade, consisting of a captain and 6 men, with one manual engine. The trustees of the late Rev. Thomas Alexander Cooke MA. of Polstead Hall (d. 1895) are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Messrs. Growse, Scarfe, Spilling and William Squirrell, and the trustees of S. B. White. The soil is clay; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, oats and turnips. There are 1,420 acres of tolerably good land, which is principally arable; rateable value, £2,013; the population of the parish in 1891 was 736 in the civil and 744 in the ecclesiastical parish.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 25 July, 1876; Joseph Gibbs, clerk to the board.

Board School, built in 1853, for 130 children; average attendance, 132; a class room for an additional 35 infants was erected in 1896; there is master's residence with a good garden attached.
