Historical Description

Botesdale is pleasantly situated near the borders of Norfolk, 85 miles-from London. It was formerly called Botolph’s Dale, from a chapel dedicated to St. Botolph, which for many years has been in a state of disuse for sacred purposes; but lately, by the spirited exertions of the inhabitants, assisted by the subscription of Thomas Holt, esq. and other neighbouring gentlemen, it has been very substantially repaired and neatly fitted up for divine: service, with a salary by subscription to the master of the free grammar-school, for a sermon and prayers on Sundays. This school was founded in the reign of Queen Elizabeth by Sit Nicholas Bacon, and is with the dwelling-house, at the west end of the chapel. The master and usher are to; be elected out of Bene t college, Cambridge, where Sir Nicholas was educated. The school-house was the gift of the late Edmund Britiffe, esq. Sir Nicholas also bequeathed 20l. a year to the said college for six scholars out of this school, to whom likewise Archbishop Tenison is said to have given 6l. annually.

Botesdale is a rectory annexed to Redgrave, whose parish church, distant about two miles, is worthy the attention of the curious. There are monuments, which for beauty of marble, and sculpture are not exceeded by any in the kingdom; one of which is to the memory of the aforementioned Sir Nicholas Bacon, another to that great expounder of the law, Lord Chief Justice Holt, with many monumental inscriptions on marble, all in a high state of preservation.

It has been lately outwardly adorned with a neat new steeple of white brick; likewise new paved and ornamented within, chiefly at the expence of the late Rowland Holt, esq.

Botesdale is small and ill built, containing only 65 houses, and 565 inhabitants. It has a market on Thursdays. Between Botesdale and Redgrave is Redgrave Hall and Park, the seat of Admiral Wilson.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BOTESDALE is a small town, with portions of the parishes of Rickinghall Inferior and Rickinghall Superior adjoining, forming one street of nearly a mile in length, on the road from Bury St. Edmunds to Norwich, 4 ½ miles west from Mellis station, on the main line of the Great Eastern railway, 6 south-west from Diss, in Norfolk, 8 west-by-north from Eye, 15 from Bury St. Edmunds and 87 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hartismere hundred, petty sessional division and union, county court district of Eye, rural deanery of North Hartismere, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. This place, for ecclesiastical purposes, is in the parish of Redgrave. Gas Works were erected in 1862, but are now disused. The water supply is obtained from wells. The church of St. Botolph was rebuilt about 1500, as a memorial chapel to the Sheriffe and Wykes families, as appears from the following inscription over the doorway:-“Orate pro animabus Johannis Schrebe et Julianae uxoris ejus orate pro anima Bregyt Wykys”; it is a structure of flint with one bell, and in 1884 was purchased by Miss Wilson and conveyed to trustees, and has since been used for Church of England services: there is a memorial window to Mr. Hepworth; the church affords 250 sittings. The living is a chapelry, annexed to the rectory of Redgrave, net yearly value £400, including 42 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of George Holt Wilson esq. and held since 1881 by the Rev. Thomas Holt Wilson MA. of Christ’s College, Cambridge, rural dean of South Hartismere and surrogate, who resides at Redgrave. Here is a Congregational chapel, built about 1846, and a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1832. The Gospel Hall is the meeting place of the Plymouth Brethren. Broom Hills, the residence of George Holt Wilson esq. D.L., J.P. was formerly the dower house of Redgrave Hall. Botesdale Lodge, the residence of James Devereux Hustler esq. J.P. situated a mile east from the village, is a modern mansion of white brick, with castellated turrets. George Holt Wilson esq. who is lord of the manor, and Algernon D. Tuck esq. of St. Giles street, Norwich, are the principal landowners. The soil is principally mixed; subsoil, marl, sand and gravel. The crops are generally on the four-course system. The area is 1,234 acres of land and 35 of water; rateable value, £1,800; the population in 1891 was 455.

Under a scheme dated May 2nd, 1881, the funds of the old Free Grammar school, founded by Sir Nicholas Bacon in 1576, are administered by trustees so as to enable pupils from elementary schools to proceed to some higher grade school: exhibitions granted by the trustees for this purpose are called “Bacon Exhibitions,” & children from any of the parishes which adjoin either Redgrave or Botesdale, as well as children from Redgrave & Botesdale, are eligible. Messrs. Barnard & Hamblin Smith, well-known as mathematicians, were scholars at the old Grammar school.

Parish Room, used for meetings, concerts &c.

Dyer’s Charity (mixed & infants), for 60 children; average attendance, 25.

The children of the town also attend the National school at Redgrave.
