Historical Description

BOXFORD is a parish and large village at the boundary of four parishes, and consists of one long street, the north side of which is in Groton parish, it is 6 miles-east from Sudbury station on the Bury and Marks Tey line of the Great Eastern railway, in the Southern division of the county, Babergh hundred, petty sessional division of Boxford, Cosford union, Hadleigh county court district, rural deanery of Hadleigh, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The river Box flows through the village. The church of St. Mary is a large building of flint, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave with clerestory, aisles, north and south porches and a western tower, with spire, containing a clock and 8 bells: the north porch is a fine example of Decorated work and has a groined roof; the south porch is richly panelled: the church was completely restored in 1886, and affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1557; and there are churchwardens’ accounts from 1529. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £307, including 38 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1884 by the Rev. John Seager Warman MA. of Balliol College, Oxford. The Congregational chapel for this village is just within the parish of Edwardstone; it was built in 1823, and has a small burial ground attached. The charities are partly distributed in bread and otherwise applied 10 the support of the National schools. Here are a malt house and flour mills. Sir Joshua Thellusson Rowley bart. of Tendring Hall, who is lord of the manor, Mr. John Frederick Parson, and Mrs. Tiffin are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, oats &c. The area is 1,324 acres; rateable value of Boxford, £2,205; the population in 1891 was 682.

Hagmore Green is 1 mile south-west and White Street Green is 1 south-east.

Petty Sessions are held at the Police court, Polstead, every fourth Friday at 11 a.m. except twice in the year. The following places are included in the petty sessional division:-Assington, Boxford, Bures St. Mary, Edwardstone, Groton, Milden, Newton, Nayland, Polstead, Stoke-by-Naytand & Wissington Police Station, William Peake, supt. & 2 constables.

The Grammar school, founded & endowed by Queen Elizabeth, has ceased to exist, & the income is now applied in the form of exhibitions for competition at some school higher than the elementary schools approved by the governors.

National, built in 1838, for 140 children; average attendance, 110.
