Historical Description

BRADWELL is a parish and village, seated on a height, 3 miles south-south-west from Yarmouth (Southtown) station on the Great Eastern railway and 8 north-west from Lowestoft, in the Northern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and incorporation of Mutford and Lothingland, Great Yarmouth county court district, rural deanery of Lothingland, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Nicholas is a structure of flint with stone dressings, in the Later Decorated style, consisting of chancel,, nave, aisles, south porch and low round western tower containing 3 bells: the font is octagonal, and adorned with carved figures, four of which represent the evangelists; the chancel retains a piscina and sedilia; and on the north side are two carved kneeling figures; the communion plate includes a chalice inscribed “brad well * CHVRCH * CVP * 1668;” in 1875 the church was partially restored and reseated with open benches, at a cost of about £900, and a new pulpit, reading desk and chancel stalls erected, and an open-timbered roof was also placed above the chancel: the porch was rebuilt in 1889 at a cost of about £200, and the churchyard enlarged in 1891: there are 262 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1560, marriages 1565 and burials 1556. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £409, besides 12 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1864 by the Rev. John Walker MA. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1891. Hobland Hall, now (1900) occupied by Mrs. Parlby, is an ancient mansion of brick, situated in a well-wooded park of 36 acres. The principal landowners are Magdalen College, Oxford, the trustees of the late James Larkman, Samuel Nightingale, jun. William Shales, John Ouzmin Pearson and William Tubby esqrs. The soil is sandy; subsoil, sandy. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 2,340 acres, nearly one-fourth of which is marsh land, near the river Yare, 17 of water and 52 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,123; population in 1891 was 542.
