Historical Description

Bramfield, a small town, without either market or fair, but abounding with corn and hay. This manor formerly constituted a part of the endowment of the college of Mettingham, built by order of John de Norwich, in the reign of Edward III. The chancel of the parish-church contains an elegant monument, by Stone, to the memory of Arthur, third son of the celebrated lawyer, Sir Edward Coke; and on the pavement are many black marble stones, for the two ancient families of Rabbet and Nelson. Upon this monument is the figure of Arthur’s lady, lying with a child on her breast, and above her is a niche, with a representation of Arthur kneeling, in complete armour. The sides of this tomb are emblazoned with arms. Beneath is a long inscription; and in an old box in the church are the remains of two suits of armour, similar to that in which Arthur is exhibited.

Bramfield-hall, a modern structure, the residence of T. S. Gooch, esq., member for the county, is situated near the church. About a mile distant was another seat, formerly belonging to Thomas Neale, esq., but afterwards used as a farm-house. That gentleman built and endowed an alms-house here for four single persons, who have each a room, and about a rood of land; and one of them has an additional allowance of three pounds per annum, for teaching six poor children to read. Mr. Neale’s widow, who afterwards married John Fowle, esq, left ten pounds per annum, to keep these alms-houses in repair, and for the instruction of six more children. Bramfield-hall is now the property of R. Rabbet, esq.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BRAMFIELD is a village and parish miles south from Halesworth station, on the Great Eastern railway and the same distance from the Blyth, in the North Eastern division of the county, Blything hundred, petty sessional division and union, Halesworth county court district, rural deanery of South Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient building of flint, in the Early Decorated style, with a thatched roof, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled round tower, standing detached at a distance of about 20 feet and containing 5 bells, refitted at Easter, 1890, by Day and Sons, of Dereham, at a cost of about £50: in the chancel are sedilia and a crocketed piscina, and there is a similar piscina in the nave: a Perpendicular oak screen of great beauty divides the nave and chancel, the lower part of which is adorned with ancient paintings of the Fout Evangelists and St. Mary Magdalene: in the chancel is a large monument, with effigies in marble, to Arthur (3rd son of Sir Edward Coke, kt. Lord Chief Justice of England), ob. 6 Dec. 1629, and Elizabeth his wife (daughter of Sir George Waldegrave, kt. of Hitcham): on the monument are a large number of armorial bearings of the Coke and Waldegrave families and there are also several tablets to the families of Rabett and Nelson: on the north wall of the nave, between the four arms of a cross which was fixed to the wall beneath an arched recess, are figures of nimbed angels issuing from and bearing scrolls and chalices: there is also, under the plaster, a painting of St. George and the Dragon: all the chancel windows are stained: a vestry was added on the south side of the chancel in 1888 by Miss Tatlock, at a cost of about £100: the church affords 300 sittings. The register dates from 1539. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £142, including 4 ¼ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Hugh Tregarthen Millett B.A. of St. David’s College, Lampder: the great tithes, held by Joseph Fry esq. of Ipswich, are commuted at £420 yearly. Here is a Congregational chapel, built in 1841, with burial ground attached, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1851. There are charities derived from land at Metfield, left in 1701 by Thomas Neale, for an almshouse, erected in 1723, for 8 poor persons, and for teaching six poor children. Castle Hard is an ancient British earthwork, in which bronze and stone celts have been discovered. Bramfield Hall, formerly the seat of the Rabett family, who lived in this parish about four centuries, is now the residence of Mrs. Southgate. Bramfield House, a mansion of brick, is the property and residence of Miss Tatlock. The Earl of Stradbroke is lord of the manor of Bramfield with Brook Hall, otherwise Stonhams: part of the parish is in the manor of Blythburgh, of which Sir Ralph Barrett Macnaghten Blois bart. of Cockfield Hall, is lord. Mrs. Margaret Ogilvie, of Sizewell, Miss Tatlock, and the trustees of the late H. A. S. Bence esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed, chiefly clay and partly of a light sandy nature; subsoil, sand, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, peas and roots. The area is 2,599 acres; rateable value, £3,908; and the population in 1891 was 535.

National School (mixed), erected in 1872, at the expense of Miss Tatlock, lor about 160 children; average attendance, 92.
