Historical Description

BUXHALL is a parish and village, 3 ½ miles west-by-south from Stowmarket station on the Ipswich and Norwich section of the Great Eastern railway, in the North Western division of the county, Stowmarket petty sessional division, Stow hundred and union, county court district of Stowmarket, rural deanery of Stow, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is an ancient battlemented edifice, principally of flint, in the Norman style, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and massive western tower, supported by buttresses and containing 5 bells: there is an ancient stone font, and several monumental slabs to the Copinger and Hill families: in the chancel are two ancient oak benches, with the carved arms of the Copinger and Herries families: in 1875 the interior was restored and fitted throughout with open oak benches, and now affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, gross income £626, with residence and 30 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Rev. Henry Copinger Hill B.A. of Long Melford, and held since 1870 by the Rev. Henry Hill B.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and J.P. Suff. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1878. The parish has two small charities. A curious grant, made by Henry VIII. to a member of the Copinger family, is in possession of the present rector, and runs as follows:-“Henry by the grace of God King of England and France and lord of Ireland to all manner our subjects as well of the spiritual pre-eminence and dignities as of the temporal auctority these our letters hearing and seeing and to every of them greeting whereas we be credibly informed that our trusty and well-beloved subject Walter Coppinger is so diseased in his head that without his great danger he cannot be conveniently discovered of the same: in consideration whereof we have by these presents licensed him to use and wear his bonet upon his said head as well in our presence as elsewhere at his liberty wherefore we will and command you and every of you to permit and suffer him so to do without any your challenge disturbance or interruption to the contrary as you and every of you tender our pleasure. Given under our signet at our manor of Greenwich the 24th day of October in the 4th year of our reign (1512)-Henry R.” Walter A. Copinger esq. LL.D, of Cockerells hall, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The chief crops are wheat, barley and clover. The soil is of a mixed nature, but in most parts a stiff clay; subsoil, clay. The parish contains 2,557 acres; assessable value, £1,564; and had a population in 1891 of 424.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 20 March, 1876; Henry Sawyer, clerk to the board.
