Historical Description

CARLTON COLVILLE is a parish, containing several villages, 2 miles south from the Lowestoft navigation, 115 ¼ from London by rail and 110 by road through Ipswich, and 3 ½ south-west from Lowestoft, in the Northern, division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and incorporation of Mutford and Lothingland, county court district of Lowestoft, rural deanery of Lothingland, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The East Suffolk railway from Lowestoft to Beccles passes through the parish, and has a station near Mutford Bridge. This parish comprises two villages about 1 mile south of Carlton Colville railway station and including the post office, but there is a third and more important village on the extreme north of the parish between Carlton Colville and Oulton Broad railway stations, and a fourth near Kirkby Church. The church of St. Peter is an ancient structure of flint in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the church was restored in 1883, when the east end was entirely rebuilt and new-roofed, the interior refloored and reseated, a north porch added, and an organ erected at a cost of £250: the total cost of the restoration, amounting to £3,000, was defrayed by the rector: there are 450 sittings. The register dates from about the year 1716: the earlier ones were destroyed by fire. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £270, including 18 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. William Hale Andrews MA. rector of Ermington, Devon, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Reginald Augustus Bignold. The church of St. Mark (a chapel of ease to St. Peter’s) was built in 1884, at a cost of £1,700, on a site given by George Edwards esq. J.P. and is a structure of white brick, consisting of chancel and nave, and will seat 400 persons. Here are also Congregational and Primitive Methodist chapels. On the banks of the Waveney are marshes. The trustees of the late Richard Henry Reeve esq. of Lowestoft, who is lord of the manor, the Rev. William Hale Andrews MA. the trustees of John Allen esq. Benjamin Johnson esq. and the Rev. B. G. Bamard-Smith MA. are the chief landowners. The Soil is good mixed; subsoil, strong loam. The chief crops are wheat, barley, peas, beans and roots. The area is 2,827 acres of land, 27 of tidal water and 62 of foreshore; rateable value, £6,346 5s. and the population in 1891 was 1,826.

Mutford Bridge, crossing the Lowestoft navigation, 2 miles north, gives its name to a populous and pleasant village, situated partly in this and partly in Oulton parish, midway between Oulton Broad and Carlton railway stations, the former on the Norwich and Lowestoft branch, and the latter on the Beccles and Lowestoft branch, a quarter of a mile from each. Oulton Broad, at Mutford Bridge, is a fresh water lake, divided from the sea by a lock, and is much frequented by anglers in the summer season. Colville House, a mansion of white brick, near Oulton Broad, is now unoccupied. Woolner’s Car is a wood to the north-west of Carlton Colville.

National, built in 1843, for 170 children, but was enlarged in 1875 & 1890; average attendance,180.

National (girls & infants), built in 1889, for 170 children; average attendance, 200.
