Historical Description
CHARSFIELD is a parish and scattered village on the Potford brook, 3 miles west from Wickham Market, 5 west from Wickham Market station, 5 ½ south-west from Framglinham, 5 ½ north-east from Woodbridge, in the South Eastern division of the county, Loes hundred, Woodbridge union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Loes, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Peter, with the exception of the porch and tower, which are of red brick, is an edifice of rubble and plaster, with remains of Norman and Perpendicular work, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower containing 5 bells, the tenor bearing, it is affirmed, the date 1068, and a clock with chimes: the communion plate includes a silver flagon of ancient workmanship, dated 1576, and an ancient chalice, paten and alms-dish: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1722. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £90, including 20 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Edward G. Hodgson esq. and held since 1895 by the Rev. Joshua Davies, of St. Aidan's, Birkenhead. The rectorial tithes, commuted for £160 yearly, are held by Mrs. Stephens. Here is a Baptist chapel with a burial ground attached. A charity of £208 5s. 3d. bequeathed by Mr. Joseph Kersey, produces £5 14s. yearly, which is expended in coal for the poor.
Here are sand pits. The trustees of the late Duke of Hamilton and Brandon K.T. and John R. Wood esq. who are lords of the manor, George Youngman esq. of Maidstone, the trustees of the late Dudley R. Hodgson esq. Edwd. Gowring Hodgson esq. the trustees of the late Mr. John Cutting and Mr. Fredk. Catt are the principal landowners. The soil is heavy; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley and roots. The parish contains 1,357 acres of land; rateable value, £1,656; the population in 1891 was 411.
