Historical Description

CLAYDON is a parish and large village, on the Gipping, a tributary of the Orwell, and hall a mile north-west from the Claydon station on the Ipswich and Bury section of the Great Eastern railway, 73 miles from London and 4 north from Ipswich, in the South Eastern division of the county, Bosmere hundred, Bosmere and Claydon petty sessional division and union, Ipswich county court district, rural deanery of Claydon, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Peter is a small edifice of rubble and flint, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing one bell; the western angles of the nave and the south doorway, exhibit Saxon long and short work; the remainder of the nave and the tower are Perpendicular; the chancel and transepts were rebuilt in 1852, in the Decorated style: the church has been reseated with open oak benches and affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, consolidated with that of Akenham, joint net yearly value £410, including 30 acres of glebe in this parish and 20 acres in Akenham, with residence, in the gift of George Drury esq. and held since 1896 by Rev. Ansell Jones, of St. Bees. Here are Baptist and Congregational chapel's. In the parish are limekilns, some chalk pits and 2 whiting manufactories. Claydon Hall, now a farmhouse, is built on the site of an ancient castle, part of the moat of which still remains. The Old Hall, formerly known as Mock Beggars Hall, half a mile south of the village, and now the residence of Richard Corder esq. is an Elizabethan mansion, built for the Aylmer family in 1621, and the initial letters I. A. with the date 1621 appear on the upper part of the house. The Kennels is the property and residence of M. G, Hale esq. who breeds and trains here a large number of greyhounds. Lord De Saumarez, of Shrubland Park, who is lord of the manor; the trustees of Tooley’s Almshouses, Ipswich, Richard Corder esq. and Messrs. B. Cockrell and Henry Frederick Moore are the principal landowners. The land is a mixed soil, on a chalk subsoil. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and peas. The area is 971 acres; rateable value, £2,006; the population in 1891 was 562.

This parish is included in the Blakenham United School Board district, formed 4 Oct. 1875.
