Historical Description

CODDENHAM is a parish and large village, 3 miles east from Needham Market station, 3 north from Claydon station, both on the Ipswich and Norwich section of the Great Eastern railway, and 7 north from Ipswich, in the South Eastern division of the county, hundred of Bosmere, Bosmere and Claydon petty sessional division and union, county court district of Ipswich, rural deanery of Bosmere, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a building of flint and stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave with clerestory, aisles, north porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 8 bells: it has some good monuments, and a stained window erected by the present vicar: in the chancel are the remains of some very interesting paintings which formed part of the rood screen, and on one of which the date 1535 can be clearly made out: the octagonal font of Ancaster and Mansfield stone was placed in the church in 1883: the church was restored in 1889 at a cost of £1,700, and the chancel in 1893, an organ, choir stalls, and a reredos have also been provided: the high pews were removed by the Rev. R. Longe in 1886: the church affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1543. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Crowfield annexed, joint net yearly value £540, including 28 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1890 by the Rev. Walter Wyles MA. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel, seating about 120 persons. A new burial ground was consecrated in 1895 by the Bishop of Norwich. In the village is a small free library, established by the late Rev. Robert Longe MA. vicar (1834—90), in connection with the Suffolk association, as well as a library of 500 volumes for the use of the school children. Lord De Saumarez, of Shrubland Park, is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. Chalk is a common character of the soil two feet below the surface on the south and south-west side of the parish, and extends to 70 feet in depth before water appears; there are two large chalk pits, but only one is in common use. The soil is mixed; subsoil, chalk and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and peas. The area is 2,721 acres of well-cultivated land and 12 of water; rateable value, £3,092; the population in 1891 was 1,094.

National School (mixed), rebuilt in 1858, for 140 children; average attendance, 105; the school is endowed with £60 yearly.
