Historical Description

COWLINGE is a parish and large scattered village on the Cambridgeshire border, 8 ½ miles north-north-west from Clare, 8 ½ south-south-east from Newmarket and 8 north-east from Haverhill station on the Cambridge and Colchester section of the Great Eastern railway, in the Southern division of the county, Risbridge hundred and union, Newmarket petty sessional division, county court district of Haverhill, Thurlow rural deanery, Sudbury archdeaconry and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Margaret is an ancient building in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch and a western tower of red brick containing 5 bells: the chancel is divided from the nave by an ancient screen of carved oak, on the north side of which is a fine marble monument to Francis Dickins, barrister-at-law, d. 27 May, 1747: the font is octagonal: most of the windows retain fragments of old glass: there are 306 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £150, with 30 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Master and fellows of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Algernon Sydney Osborne Sweet, of St. Augustine’s College, Cambridge. The impropriate, rectorial and vicarial tithes together produce between £700 and £800 net yearly-the commutation is £942—and belong to Trinity Hall. There are Congregational and Primitive Methodist chapels. The charities include 10 acres of land, left by an unknown benefactor and held by the parish clerk, as annexed to his office. Deyne's charity, consisting of a farm at Cowlinge, produces £20 a year, which is divided among the parishes of Moulton, Barrow, Cowlinge and Hargrave. is lord of the manor.

Branches Park, with grounds of upwards of 200 acres, finely timbered, is a large mansion, now (1900) unoccupied. Samuel Pond esq. and Arthur E. Cook esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay. The crops are wheat, barley, beans, peas and roots. The area is 3,064 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, £2,310; the population in 1891 was 592.

Bridgend, 1 mile south-by-west and Hobbles Green, 1 south-west are hamlets.

A School Board of 5 members was formed compulsorily 24 March, 1880; E. W. Fitch, Cambridge, clerk to the board.

Board School, erected, with a house for the teacher, on land given by Trinity Hall, Cambridge, at a cost of £1,200, for 135 children; average attendance, 83.
