Historical Description
DALHAM is a village and parish pleasantly situated in a valley on the borders of Cambridgeshire, 9 ½ miles west from Bury St. Edmunds, 5 ½ miles south-east from Newmarket and 3 ½ south from Higham station on the Newmarket and Bury section of the Great Eastern railway, in the North Western division of the county, Risbridge hundred, Newmarket petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Thurlow, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. A watercourse runs through the village by the side of the road, over which there are several wooden foot bridges. The church of St. Mary is a building of flint, chiefly of the Perpendicular period, and consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: the date “Anno Domini, 1625,” is inscribed on the battlements of the tower: there is also a board in the church recording that “This steeple was re-edified in 1625 by Sir Martin Stuteville, lord of the manor, and others, at a cost of £400;” the tower, however, both in its proportions and detail, dates from about the end of the 15th century: the spire was blown down by a gale on the day of Oliver Cromwell’s death, 3 Sept. 1658; the church was reseated in 1866 with oak benches and the chancel was restored in 1867; the tracery on the fronts of all the choir desks is a reproduction of mediaeval work found in the church during the restoration: a stained west window was erected in 1894 as a memorial to Sir Robert Affleck bart. who died 9 Oct. 1882, and other windows to Mrs. R. Frewen, his eldest daughter, and to several younger children: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £245, with 42 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Sir Robert Affleck bart. and held since 1876 by the Rev. Henry Bruce Pugh MA. of Balliol College, Oxford, and rural dean of Thurlow. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel. Dalham Hall, the seat of Sir Robert Affleck bart. D.L., J.P. is an ancient mansion erected in 1704 by Simon Patrick, Bishop of Ely, 1691—1707; it is very pleasantly situated on an eminence, and is surrounded by an extensive park: the estate covers an area of 3,500 acres. Sir R. Affleck bart. is lord of the manor of Dalham and of Abbots in Denham, and owner of nearly the whole parish. The soil is various; subsoil, chalk, clay and gravel. The crops are wheat, barley and turnips, mangold, some sainfoin, beans and peas. The area is 2,096 acres; rateable value, £2,271; the population in 1891 was 364.
National School (mixed), erected in 1874, for 90 children; average attendance, 50.
