Historical Description

DALLINGHOO is a village and parish 4 ½ miles west from Wickham Market station on the Ipswich and Lowestoft section of the Great Eastern railway, 4 ½ north from Woodbridge and 81 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, Wilford hundred, Woodbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Wilford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary, formerly connected with the Abbey of Letheringham, is a building of flint with stone dressings, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, and consists of nave, south porch, vestry, organ chamber and an embattled tower containing one bell: the chancel has been removed and the tower, originally standing between the nave and chancel, now forms the east end of the church: the oak pulpit, with its sounding board, belongs to the Jacobean period, and is richly carved: the brass lectern was given in memory of Major John Handcock Low, 39th Bengal Native Infantry; the carved stone font was erected in 1868, and in 1881 a marble tablet was erected by the parishioners to the Rev. Ellis Waltford MA., B.D. rector from 1830: the church was restored in 1883, when the nave was re-seated with oak benches, under the direction of Mr. Bassett Smith, architect, of London: there are 184 sittings. A lych gate of oak was erected at the entrance of the churchyard in 1887. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £270, including 31 acres of glebe with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Wm. Stewart Walford, vicar of St. Mary at the Quay, Ipswich, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Albert Brooke Webb MA. of Caius College, Cambridge. There are charities of about £30 yearly. The interest of £208 5s. 3d. left by Joseph Kersey, produces £6 5s. yearly, which is given to the poor; the rents of 9 acres of land, 7 acres being situated in Wickham Market and 2 acres in Dallinghoo, were left for the repairs of the church; there are also three tenements let to aged widows at 13s. a year, and 3 acres of land, the rent of which is distributed to the poor in coals; 10s. left by Sarah Roe, out of a farm owned by Lady Huntingfield, is given in bread; and there is a sum of 20s. a year left by Thomas Mills, of Framlingham, out of lands belonging to the rector. The trustees of G. Largent esq. and Arthur Heywood esq. D.L., J.P. of Glevering Hall, Hacheston, are owners of the manors, and Albt. Ellis Blackney Wade esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is good heavy land; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley and roots. The parish contains 1,500 acres, most part arable; rateable value, £1,533 12s. 6d.; the population in 1891 was 260.
