Historical Description

DARSHAM is a parish with a station 1 mile west from the village, on the Ipswich and Lowestoft section of the Great Eastern Railway, 95 miles by rail from London, 6 north-east from Saxmundham and 5 south-east from Halesworth, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Blything, county court district of Halesworth, rural deanery of South Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of All Saints is a structure of flint with stone dressings in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 4 bells: in the chancel are some fine brasses, including one to Mrs. Anne Bedingfield, dated 1641: the font, which has carved figures on the sides, is ancient: there is a stained lancet window at the east end, and another window on the south side of the chancel to Arthur Alexander, youngest son of Col. Purvis, late of Darsham: the church was restored and re-seated in 1879 at a cost of £450, and in 1887 the porch was renovated: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1537. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £100, including 6 acres of glebe with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Stradbroke, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Christopher Tennant MA., D.C.L, of University College, Durham, who is also vicar of Blyford. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel. The town estate produces about £24 a year, which sum is received by the churchwardens and applied to the repairs of the church and the relief of the poor. Brussels Green, in Darsham, was inclosed in 1851. Darsham Hall, once a fine mansion, is now used as a farm house. Darsham House, the residence of Douglas Parry-Crooke esq. D.L., J.P. is pleasantly situated in park-like lands and plantations, and commands a fine view. The Earl of Stradbroke, who is lord of the manor, and Douglas Parry Crooke esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is heavy and mixed; sub-soil, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and roots. The area is 1,592 acres; rateable value, £2,678; the population in 1801 was 365.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 14 Dec. 1882 Douglas Parry-Crooke esq. D.L., J.P. clerk.
