Historical Description

Debenham, a town seated on the side of a hill, near the river Deben. Its standing on an ascent, keeps it clean, but the country round it has very deep roads, which rendered it less frequented than it otherwise would be. The church is a good building, but the houses are generally mean. Here is a charity-school, founded in pursuance of the will of Sir Robert Hitcham, for twenty poor children of this parish, and there is a very indifferent market on Fridays.

This town is situated 82 miles from London, and contains 187 houses, and 1535 inhabitants.

A priory formerly stood near this town, the site of which has become arable within these few years.

On yonder hill, tradition says,

A structure stood in ancient days,

Whose walls immense, and scowling brow,

Frown’d, shading; o’er the vale below:

in cell immur’d, full often there

The monks have mutter’d many a prayer;

And there the sad devoted nun

Hath often dismal penance done,

By superstition vainly driv’n,

Thus to befit themselves for heaven. —

But Gothic arch or moss-grown stone,

Or ivyed walls remaining none,

No vestige of the pile remains

Upon the hill, or round the plains,

And only by the name alone

Of "priory field," the spot is known.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

DEBENHAM is a parish and small town, in the North Eastern division of the county, 13 miles north from Ipswich, 9 north-east from Needham and Stowmarket railway stations, both on the Ipswich and Norwich section, 8 south-east of Eye, terminal station of the Great Eastern railway and 82 from London, in Thredling hundred, Framlingham petty sessional division, Bosmere and Claydon union, Framlingham and Saxmundham county court district, rural deanery of Claydon, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The name is derived from the small river Deben, which becomes navigable at Woodbridge. The town is lighted with gas by a company, from works in Water lane erected in 1858; the water supply is derived from wells. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone and flint, chiefly in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave and an embattled western tower, containing 8 bells; in the chancel are monuments to Charles Cawdy and his wife, A.D. 1650, Sir Charles Framlingham, knighted 1581, ob, 1595, and others; the aisles have been restored, under the direction of Mr. Herbert J. Green, architect, of Norwich, and both nave and aisles have been re-seated in carved oak, and afford 550 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £185, with residence, in the gift of Lord Henniker, and held since 1890 by the Rev. William Alexander Duke B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, and surrogate. Here is a Congregational chapel, renovated in 1895, at a cost of over £400, and seating 850 persons, with a Sunday school attached. A Cemetery of 1 ½ acres was purchased and laid out by the Parish Council in 1897, a cost of £400, and consecrated in 1899; there is no mortuary chapel. There are charities for the relief of the poor, derived from land, and amounting to about £40 yearly, besides £60 from Sir Robert Hitcham's charity. The Red Lion hotel, some parts of which are said to be ancient, stands in the centre of the town. There is a Village club and reading room, supplied with daily and weekly papers; it also contains a library of 250 volumes and a billiard table for the recreation of the members, who number over 60. Crow's Hall, an ancient moated mansion, built in 1310, and White Hall, are now farm houses. Lord Henniker is lord of the manor and holds a court leet and baron yearly in November: he is also impropriator of the great tithes, amounting to £651 yearly, and the principal landowner. The area is 3,317 acres of strong, well cultivated land; rateable value, £4,317; the population in 1891 was 1,219.

Endowed School, established in 1879, under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners, for the management of Sir Robert Hitcham's charity and reorganized in 1891; all infants are now admitted free, but children in standards 1 to 4 pay a fee of 2d. per week & those in the upper standards 3d. per week; the school will hold about 130 children; average attendance, 88.

National, erected in 1838 & enlarged in 1895 at a cost of £100 by the late Lord Henniker, but now forming part of the Hitcham Charity scheme; it will hold 70 children; average attendance, 72.
