Historical Description
Earl Soham, so called from its originally belonging to the earls of Norfolk. It had formerly a market, which has been long disused, but has still a fair on the 12th of July. In this village is Soham-lodge, which was anciently the seat of the family of Cornwallis, and is an old irregular house, encompassed by a brick wall and a large moat, standing within the park, to which the manor of this town belongs.
EARL SOHAM is a parish and large village 4 miles west from Framlingham terminal station on a branch of the Great Eastern railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, Plomesgate union, Loes hundred, Framlingham petty sessional division, Framlingham and Saxmundham county court district, rural deanery of Loes, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a structure of flint and brick, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells, re-hung in 1898: the chancel dates from about 1320; the nave from about 1470, and the latter has a very fine hammer beam roof: on the tower buttresses, about 12 feet from the ground, are two tablets, which have been read as follows:—
“Thomas Edward was the author of the church tower of this parish and at the same time a very great benefactor.”
“Ranulph Colnett conferred very great benefits on this holy church, may the grace of Christ be of benefit to him.”
On the base of the ancient font is this inscription, “Pray for the soul of Robert Kinge, who caused this sacred font to be made.” The arms of Charles II. which appear above the chancel arch were probably placed there by John Cotton esq. a staunch Royalist. The church was restored in 1891, at a cost of £710. The organ was rebuilt in 1898, at a cost of £100: in 1899, the tower was repaired and a fine oak lectern presented by Sir Auckland Colvin K.C.M.G., K.C.S.I. who also, in 1900, rebuilt the east wall and presented a new stained window and rich hangings for the sanctuary, at a total cost of about £500: the whole of the work has been carried out under the direction of T. G. Jackson esq. R.A., F.S.A.: the church now affords 230 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558, and contains a copy of the Solemn League and Covenant, signed or marked by a large number of the parishioners. Commissioners were sent down to compel Mr. Cotton to sign, or, failing that, to take him as a prisoner to London. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £390, including 29 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Master and Fellows of Wadham College, Oxford, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Richard Abbay MA. formerly fellow of that college, and rural dean of Loes. There are two Baptist chapels here. A cemetery of one acre was opened in 1878, and is under the control of the Parish Council. The old Baptist chapel is now used as a village club and reading room. The Town lands consist of about 44 acres, lying in four different parts of the parish. In 1677 Robert Wyard, a merchant captain, and a native of the parish, left a rent-charge of £5 yearly to be distributed after a sermon on Ps. cvii. 23 and 24, to be preached on Feb. 25 and April 23, in gratitude for his escape from shipwreck on those days. The manor was held by the Bigods, Earls of Norfolk, from 1140—1305. from whom it received the title of Earl to distinguish it from Monk Soham. From 1314 to 1547 it was the property of the Brothertons, Mowbrays and Howards, Earls and Dukes of Norfolk. George Frederick Beaumont esq. F.S.A, of The Lawn, Coggeshall, Essex, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the trustees of Martin Harsant esq. of Cretingham, the trustees of the late Osborne Springfield, Nathaniel Walter Barnardiston, of Ryes, Sudbury, the trustees of William M. Murrell and Lord Henniker. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, roots, barley and hay. The area is 1,974 acres; rateable value, £2,166; the population in 1891 was 572.
A School Board of 5 members was formed 16 July, 1875; T. W. Read, Framlingham, clerk to the board.
Board School (mixed), enlarged in 1875, at a cost of £150; a library used as a class room was added in 1891; there are 200 volumes in the library; the school will hold 127 children; average attendance, 95.
