Historical Description

EARL STONHAM is a parish and scattered village, 3 miles north-east from Needham Market station on the Ipswich and Norwich section of the Great Eastern railway and 5 east from Stowmarket, in the South Eastern division of the county, hundred of Bosmere, petty sessional division and union of Bosmere and Claydon, county court district of Stowmarket, rural deanery of Bosmere, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a beautiful cruciform structure of flint in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave with clerestory, north and south transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the roof is of chestnut wood, most elaborately carved with many curious devices and representations of angels, apostles, saints and flowers: there are an ancient font, credence table, piscina, sedilia and some brasses: the organ, with which the old organ was incorporated, was erected in 1899 at a cost of £330: during the restoration several mural paintings were found on the wall of the north transept representing the “Nativity”: over the chancel arch is a painting of the “Last Judgment”; in the south transept another of the “Martyrdom of St. Catherine” and one of “St. George and the Dragon”: fragments of the destroyed screen were in 1883 in the possession of Mr. H. Watling: the church was restored in 1875 at a cost of upwards of £2,000: there are 270 sittings. The register dates from the year 1654. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £370, with 32 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Pembroke College, Cambridge, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Henry John Shaw MA. of that college. There is a meeting room for the Brethren near Forward Green. The Reading Room, near the church, was erected and presented to the parish by Mrs. Shaw, wife of the rector, in memory of her father; it contains a library of about 300 volumes, a piano, organ, games &c. There are a few small charities for the poor. In 1886 a well was sunk on Forward Green by public subscription at a cost of £110, of which Miss Noble, of Penrith, Cumberland, contributed £50; it has been found of immense benefit to the parishioners. Earl Stonham was the site of a Roman station, and roman coins embracing a period of more than 400 years have been found here, as well as pottery in great abundance. Messrs. Hayward are lords of the manor, Lord De Saumarez, of Shrubland Park, Sir Hugh Edward Adair bart. of Flixton Hall, Pembroke College, Cambridge and John Weyland esq. of Woodeaton, near Oxford, are the principal landowners. The soil is still, rich loam; the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are beans, barley, oats and wheat. The area is 2,547 acres; rateable value, £2,752; the population in 1891 was 612.

Endowed School (mixed), built in 1869, for 100 children; average attendance, 68; the endowment is derived from various pieces of land now realizing about £40 yearly.
