Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
Easton, as the name implies, lies to the eastward of Letheringham, and was formerly the lordship of an ancient family in Kettleburgh, surnamed Charles; but afterwards the Wingfields of Letheringham were proprietors of both. Anthony Wingfield removed from Letheringham, to the house called Godwyns, in Hoo. He built the White House at Easton, and removing from Hoo, made it his seat. One of his descendants sold this seat, and the remainder of the Wingfields’ estate in this neighbourhood, to the Hon. William Nassau Zulestein, master of the robes to King William III., who was afterwards created Earl of Rochford. His son William Henry, Earl of Rochford, commanded the left wing of the English army, under General Stanhope, at Lerida, in Spain, where he was killed in July, 1710. The present hall at Easton is a handsome brick building, and is the seat of the Earl of Rochford.
EASTON is a parish and pleasant village on the river Deben, 6 miles north from Woodbridge, 3 south from Framlingham terminal station and 4 north-west from Wickham Market station on the Ipswich and Lowestoft section of the Great Eastern railway, in the Northern division of the county, Blything petty sessional division, hundred of Loes, union of Plomesgate, Framlingham and Saxmundham county court district, rural deanery of Loes, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of All Saints, which stands on an eminence within Easton park, is a building of flint with stone dressings in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an octagonal embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells: there are brasses to John Wingfield, 1584; to Radcliffe, daughter of Sir Gilbert Gerrard kt. and wife of Sir Thomas Wingfeld kt. 1601; and monuments to Dame Mary Wingfield and to William Henry (Nassau) 5th Earl of Rochford, who died unmarried 3 Sept. 1830, when the title became extinct: there is also a memorial window to William Alexander, 11th Duke of Hamilton and Brandon, d. July 15, 1863: in 1888 a new organ was presented by the Duchess of Hamilton: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £292, including 25 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Duke of Hamilton and Brandon K.T. (d. 1895), and held since 1860 by the Rev. William Watson Wood B.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Easton Park is the property of the trustees of the late Duke of Hamilton and Brandon K.T., D.L., J.P. who are lords of the manor and principal landowners: the mansion, now (1900) occupied by Lieut.-Col. Francis Alfred Lucas V.D., J.P, is of white brick two stories in height, with a fine frontage, and has been much improved by the late duke; it stands within a fine park of 148 acres, studded with cedar and other trees, and is surrounded by lawns and gardens tastefully laid out: the stables are of red brick with large square tower rising from the centre and containing a clock with four illuminated dials; there are stalls for fifty horses: the estate office is in the mansion yard. The soil is clay and loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, roots, barley, beans and hay. The parish contains 1,477 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, £1,620; the population in 1891 was 418.
