Historical Description

ELMSWELL is a parish and village, with a station on the Bury and Ipswich section of the Great Eastern railway, 86 ½ miles north-east from London, 8 ½ east from Bury St. Edmunds, 5 ½ north-west from Stowmarket and 18 north-west from Ipswich, in the North-Western division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Blackbourn, Stow union, county court district of Stowmarket, rural deanery of Thedwastre, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. Elmswell is a place of some antiquity, but its importance in the mediaeval period was due to its close connection with the great Benedictine Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds, the abbot of which was lord of the manor, and in 1433 entertained the young King Henry VI. here. A portion of the “Lord’s Chanot way” from Bury still remains in the parish as a disused Road. The church of St. John the Divine, erected by the monks of Bury and situated on an eminence, is an edifice of local flint with stone dressings, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, vestry, nave, aisles, porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells, two of which, however, are cracked y the bas& and angles of the tower and the porch exhibit fine flint work in various devices: in the church is a monument to Sir Robert Gardiner, a benefactor to the parish: the chancel was almost entirely rebuilt in 1864: the north aisle was built in 1867, and a short time previous to this the nave was repaired and fitted with an open timber roof and oak benches: the octagonal font is of the Decorated period: the pulpit and carved litany desk, both of oak, were presented by W. Luke esq.: the wrought iron screen, with gates separating the chancel from the nave, was erected in 1864 by the rector as a memorial to his parents, to whom there is also a mural brass: the walls were decorated in colour in 1884 and several memorial windows have been erected: the church affords about 300 sittings. In the churchyard are the remains of an ancient cross. The register dates from the year 1553. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £220, with 43 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the lord of the manor, and held since Jan. 1893, by the Rev. James Hipwell MA. of Queen’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Elmswell Tabernacle, on the Norwich road, is an iron building erected in 1887, at a cost of about £200, and seating 300 persons. Sir Robert Grardiner, who was lord of the manor in the time of James I. bequeathed charities of large amount for the benefit of the necessitous and deserving poor of the parish, the maintenance of six almswomen and the repairs of the church; these charities are administered by local trustees under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners. Elmswell Grange is occupied by Mrs. Durrant and Elmswell Hall is the residence of Mr. J. C. Leatherdale. The soil of the parish is composed partly of clay and partly loam; subsoil, gravel, clay and brick earth. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 2,088 acres; rateable value, £3,172; the population in 1891 was 781.

Church of England, founded in 1864 by Admiral Sir George Seymour, & held in trust for the education of the children of the poor in the principles of the Church of England; the school will hold 109 children; average attendance, 44.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 1 Nov. 1886; D. W. Collen, clerk.

Board, erected in 1891, at a cost of £800, for 170 children; average attendance, 96.
