Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
EXNING, since 1896 included in Newmarket for municipal purposes, is a parish in a part of the North Western division of the county, which is nearly detached from the rest of the county, and almost surrounded by Cambridgeshire, in the hundred of Lackford, Newmarket petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Flordham, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely, it is 2 miles north from Newmarket, apart of which lies in this parish. The church of St. Martin is an ancient structure of flint with stone dressings, in the Early English and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, south porch with a small parvise over it, and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 5 bells: the east window is of the Transitional period, and in the chancel are two ancient tombs, one of which formerly bore the brass effigy of a priests both are destitute of inscription: the church was partly reseated in 1892, and now affords 500 sittings, of which about 350 are free. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, with Landwade St. Nicholas annexed, joint net yearly value £300, arising from 225 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Arthur Vaile MA. of Oriel College, Oxford. St. Philip’s mission church is an iron structure seating 150 persons. Here is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. The Cemetery of 2 acres was formed in 1886, at a cost of £1,200, and is under the control of a Burial Board of nine members. Shepherd’s charity amounts to £60 yearly, of which a certain proportion is distributed to poor men and women and aged widows of Bottisham on St. Thomas’ day. The proceeds of an estate left by Mr. Lacy are applied to the repairs of the church. There are other small chanties amounting to about £10 yearly. Exning House, the residence of Maj. E. W. D. Baird J.P. is a mansion of red brick pleasantly situated adjoining the village. A small but rapid stream, in which pickerel are found, runs through the village, and it is said that in the severest winter the part passing the vicarage is never frozen. St. Etheldreda, Queen of Northumbria, is said to have been born here and baptized at the Seven Springs in this village; she first married Tonbert, and after his death in 655, married Ecgfrid, who was King of Northumbria from 670 to about 684; in 673 she founded a convent at Ely, of which she became abbess, and died in 679. The workhouse of the Newmarket union is in this parish; particulars are given under Newmarket, Cambridgeshire. The Jockey Club, Robert Stephenson esq. of Burwell, Cambs., Charles Moreby esq. of Soham, the Earl of Durham and Major E. W. D. Baird are the principal landowners. The soil is sand and chalk; subsoil, gravel. The crops are wheat, barley, beans and peas. The area is 4,985 acres; rateable value, £28,978; the population in 1891 was 2,757, and includes 191 officers and inmates of the union workhouse.
A School Board of 7 members was formed 20 Dec. 1872; A. A. Ruston, Grove cottage, Exning, clerk to the board.
Board School (mixed), built in 1876, for 279 children, an infants’ school being added in 1892, for 140 children; average attendance, 214 mixed & 92 infants.
Board School (junior mixed & infants), now (1900) being erected on the Newmarket road, at a cost of about £3,000, for 240 children.
