A railway from Westerfield station to this place, giving access to Ipswich, was completed and opened for traffic 1 May, 1877; in 1879 the line was acquired by the Great Eastern Railway Co. and this place is now in direct communication with Ipswich and all parts of the companys system. Three stations on the Great Eastern Railway are now open hers for general traffic-the Town, Beach and Pier Stations; the Town Station, which is the latest addition, is a handsome structure of ample proportions, erected in 1898. A Local Board of 12 members was formed in 1887 for Walton and Felixstowe United district, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), it has given place to an Urban District Council; the offices, in Undercliff road, were erected in 1892 at a cost of £1,800, and comprise a board room, rooms for the clerk, surveyor and collector, and a waiting room. The place is supplied with excellent water by the Felixstowe and Walton Water Works Co. formed in 1892, and lighted with gas by the Felixstowe Gas. Co. and with electric light, by the Sussex Electricity Supply Co. Ltd. The Parish church of SS. Peter and Paul is an ancient building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and tower containing one bell: it has been restored and has 380 sittings, more than half being free. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £112, in the gift of the Bishop of Sodor and Man and others, and held since 1893 by the Rev. William Seaver, surrogate and acting chaplain to the forces at Landguard Fort. The church has been erected mainly at the cost of Capt. E. G. Pretyman M.P. of Orwell Park: the organ was given by the Misses Parbury and a set of service books by the German Empress, in memory of her visit to Felixstowe with her children in 1891: on the fly-leaf of the Bible, in Her Majesty’s handwriting, is the following inscription:-For the Church of St. John Baptist, May 24th, 1895. Matt. x. 32. “Whosoever therefore shall confess Me before men, him will I confess also before My Father which is in heaven.” Auguste Victoria, I.R. In the prayer book the Empress has written this verse:-Matt. viii. 26, “And He saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith ? Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.” In the Communion service books, Her Majesty has simply written the date and name. The living is a vicarage, in the gift of Capt. Pretyman M.P. net yearly value £300, derived from an endowment of £30 yearly and the offertories, and held since 1895 by the Rev.
