Historical Description

FRAMSDEN is a parish, and village, centrally situated between Ipswich, Woodbridge and Stowmarket, being 11 miles from each, 7 ½ south-west from Framlingham terminal station on a branch of the Great Eastern railway and 3 south-east of Debenham, in the North Eastern division of the county, Framlingham petty sessional division, Bosmere and Claydon union, Thredling hundred, county court district of Ipswich, rural deanery of Claydon, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone and flint, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 8 bells: the communion table is dated 1628: over the west door are the arms of Charles II.: within the church Lady Jane Arundel was buried: there are 500 sittings: a finely carved oaken lych gate was erected in 1899 by subscription. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £215, including 40 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord Tollemache, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Leonard Staniforth MA., LL.M. of Trinity College, Cambridge.

There is a parish church room and a Baptist chapel, and also a branch of the Young Men’s Christian Association. Lord Tollemache is lord of the manor and the principal landowner, Framsden Hall, the property of Lord Tollemache, and now a farmhouse, contains some interesting carved work. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area is 2,859 acres; rateable value, £2,289; the population in 1891 was 734.

The children of this parish attend the school at Helmingham.
